DIY injectors and flow testing

I need some injector advice please. I know the specs say injectors should flow within 3 percent of each other and should be flow tested . But how big a problem is it to just rekit them and change the intensifier pistons and make them 160cc stage ones?
Any of you guys that have done this did you run into problems like blow your turbo, burn the tips off your injectors, melt down the pistons?
I had a convesation with someone yesterday in truck performance smart guy many you know him.
He ridiculed me for 30 minutes about what an idiot I was to do this . My 7.3 intercooler was a waste of time idiotic idea ,the 6637 filter is even dumber idea etc. etc..!

Sounds like a great guy you talked to...

With the DIY kit, just remember you get what you pay for. If you want a top notch rebuild, you need to send them in to a shop. If you want the cheap option, you can rebuild them yourself. Many, many guys have had great success rebuilding their injectors themselves.
As for flow matching I can point out a few things that I have seen.
For one, your injectors will not get 'out of balance' becasue you rebuilt them to flow more. They already are out of balance because each part wears slightly differently. As long as you machine the Intensifier Pistons to exaclty the same length and your nozzles flow good and your Plunger & barrels are in good shape, they will flow really close at high rpm's.

There are almost infinite settings you can test these injectors at. When flow matching I test in 3 settings: Idle, cruising and Wide Open Throttle. They almost always flow within 3% - 4% at WOT, but injectors with all used nozzles and P&B's never flow close at the other tests I run. In fact, it's near imposible to get them to flow closer then 8% or so with all used parts UNLESS I spend hour after hour swapping used parts to find the right combination. I do not recommend anyone expect to flow within 3% at the lower tests with used parts. Used nozzles, I have seen, are the biggest culprit. New nozzles and they usually flow spot on for all the tests.

Having said all that, if you did your with a DIY Kit, purchased new nozzles and took care of machining Poppet valve clearances, etc, I'd bet yours would flow really well.

Hope this helps.
Let me know if you have any other questions.
Thanks,
Jim

I replied to your PM but I will post on the forum as well. I know who you are talking about and have heard the same things. I reject every idea he has laid to you as well as what he said to me and many others. I don't know if its because he also makes a living at selling the parts that are the counterparts to what he put down or if he really thinks that and it very opinionated about it. Either way all the products he put down are not bad product and IMO are great products! If your headed for breaking HP records then there other things you should be looking at but the facts are that all of us here are looking to make our trucks fun and powerful. Would be we love 700HP yes. Can we afford it? not many of us. So we make good power and have a lot of fun with Homegrown options!
