When my build 3 F250 enters the dpf cleaning cylce, a lot of times it does not fully complete due to my stop & go driving, commuting, etc. When I restart the truck and drive a few miles, the regen will start again, but it never restarts until I have driven for a few miles. Does the system have to reach a certain temperature before it begins the regen cycle again?
Yes. The regeneration is done by heating the DPF to over 1000 degrees F by injecting raw fuel into the exhaust stroke of the pistons and burning it as it hits the catalyst right in front of the DPF. You are burning the unburnt carbon and soot to ash during this cycle and wasting a ton of fuel.

Yes the truck will wait until it is warmed up before starting regen. It's believe that the white smoke some people complain about during regen was caused by the cats not being completely warmed up before the regen kicked off.
Sounds like it is working as designed like the other guys said..I know this sounds like a pain, but when you see the message..try to get on the highway(or freeway) and drive until it completes..mine usually finishes in about 10-20 minutes with steady speeds over 40-50mph..
yes, it is a pain in the ___ sometimes. With my schedule the last few days, I have had lots of short trips here and there. It would go into the cleaning mode but never finish before I stopped. Finally, yesterday I had about a 15 minute non-stop drive and the cycle completed. I'm sure that much diesel fuel was wasted in the process!
The other day my truck went into regen just before I got home. It was in regen for maybe 2 minutes. When I was parking my truck the screen had switched to "drive to clean exhaust filter". So today I knew it needed to be cleaned so I take it out for a drive on the highway. By the time I got home I had put on about 70 miles and over an hour of driving time. It never tried to go into regen and the message center is showing everything is OK. I guess it will go down as one of those things that make you go Hmmm.

Funny...mine did the exact same thing tonight. I'll have to see what tomorrow brings.
alot of times mine goes into regen in the city, so with stop and go it can never get cleaned. So eventually I take for a drive somewhere and it catchs at a good time. It is just one of the things.
Once in awhile I am in the suburbs and it goes in regen mode and doesnt get to complete the cycle. Most of the times though I am on the open highway since I use my truck for my job. Therefor it usually gets to complete the cycle before I have to park the truck.
All of mine had been on the highway until now as well. I just can't figure out why it didn't go back into regen after I parked it for a few days. It was saying drive to clean filter when I parked it and then when I started the truck back up after a few days all is clear and it doesn't feel it needs to regen at this time. (little like my ex)
my issue with it is the amount of fuel it wastes in these situations. before the cycle began, I was averaging about 13.5mpg. With all the "incomplete" cycles, it dropped to 10.6 mpg.
