Very Long DPF Regen Cycle

I searched and this seems odd. This morning I used remote start to start the truck, no issue. I entered the truck and inserted the key, turned it on, and drove off. Again no problems. After driving 10 miles or so a regen started. As far as I can tell (throttle response and mileage) the regen lasted for 60 miles! It stopped when I stopped the truck and turned it off. After restart it acted normally. Has anyone ever seen this happen?

The OP has an F-250 XLT. I have the 350 XLT. I wounder if the XLTs have messages on regeneration or not. I have never, ever seem any messages regarding regeneraton for 10,000 miles. I now have the Edge gauge and can see when the regen starts and ends. 60 miles seems like a long regen time.

I have an XLT and the cleaning message pops up periodically.

I did not notice the message. I typically miss them. I do not have the fancy display, just the plain green one. I do wish Ford would have an icon that shows when regen is in process.

I do drive quite a few short trips. Prior to this I drove around town for a week (6 to 10 miles per trip). Last night I did get a cleaning message on the way to a Boy Scout meeting but I was only able to drive about 5 miles after the message.

I can usually tell when it is in regen by the throttle response (feels like something is holding the truck back) and of course the horrible drop in mileage. For the duration this morning (60 to 80 miles) I was getting 14 mpg! This was on the highway. It normally runs from 18.5 to 19.5 on the highway. The total trip was 250 miles, so I have gotten in a long trip.

Thanks for responses! And I will answer questions as well as I can.

One more thing: the display devices that I see mentioned (aftermarket Insight CS), do they tell you when in regen?

Okay. Thanks. The messages are hard for me to read.

I have the Edge Insite CTS, and I can see the "soot" values (whatever they are). After a regen I can see the soot levels going down to, for example, 1.39. Then you can watch the soot level go up, for example, 1.82. Then the regen starts and the soot values go down.

I do not have the fancy readout on the dash, so I really like the Edge CTS. I watch 8 parameters, such as soot level, oil temp, water temp, trans temp and gas exhaust temps. I tell you, the exhaust temps get up to 1400 deg F during regen. Scarry. Tell me this truck is going to last 100,000 miles!!!

The "cleaning" message comes on for only a short while but the process typically lasts between 10-20 miles of normal driving (not downhill or city driving). The reason I know that is because I am using an Edge Insight CTS which shows when the engine is in regen process for the duration. You should NOT see any difference in performance, throttle response or whatever. All you might see without the Insight is a slight drop in fuel mileage. Unless you have a true indicator, it is not likely that the process lasted as long as you think.

The basic XL/XLT message center does show the "cleaning exhaust" message for two seconds.
I miss most of them.
The small red dot on the CTS catches my eye more than Ford's screen.
If you're considering a monitor, I recommend the CTS over the CS.

The computer will tell you if the soot count is too high with a static message "drive to clean exhaust."
I've never seen this message but I think it remains on the screen until the active regeneration process begins.

Everybody seems to get caught up on the exhaust temp, but #2, 3 or 4 don't really have anything to do with engine safety factors. If EGT #1 was 1400* I could see the concern. The 6.4 guys used to talk about extreme EGT and I never understood until I was able to monitor the temps on this 6.7. The EGT is increasing in the catalyst and DPF way beyond what the actual temperature is up closer to the engine where EGT is normally monitored. I see #3 & #4 get well over 1300* all the time during regen but #1 is well under 1000* at the same time.

That is exactly what I experience......I read here about "poor throttle" and " no power" and always think to myself that something else has to be wrong with these guys trucks because I never experience any of that during regen....

I've noticed a bit of sluggishness during a clean cycle. Also, the mileage doesnt seem to reset itself, it keeps reading low. After a key cycle it will reset unless the cycle was not complete.

I have to say that its quite disappointing watching my mileage go down the tubes.

Hey guys

Would you mind posting a picture of where and how you have the cts mounted?

I am interested in one but would like to see where they are perched

Thanks
