ok guys basically a quick question about my dads friends 98 explorer 4x4....so he called my dad last night and said he put his explorer in reverse it backed up a couple feet and he like heard a loud pop/thump noise and he lost reverse and he also dont have first gear anybody have a clue at all what it could be???
hes not getting any code lights blinking any i just got off the phone with him and he said it runs perfectly fine in drive but one thing he did notice if he would try to manualy down shift it, the tranny would want to shift but the motor rpms would drop when he shifted it?? and i asked him if it made a popping noise when he was backing up and exact words are "yes like it jumped into neutral"

When you say runs perfectly fine in drive, do you mean it does have first gear now, just no reverse?
ok soo put the transfer case in 4-low and if he got reverse back its a bad transfer case but if he dont its a broken band?? if you dont mind explaining how putting the transfer case in 4low would fig that out??
its a 98 explorer i believe 4.0l v6, i will defintly tell him to try that he wakes up at 4pm estern time, soo basically put the transfer case in 4low and if he has reverse then its a transfer case problem but if still no reverse then its a broken band....thats very good information i would have never known if you could explain how this works to me i would appreciate it.. cause i always thought a bad transfer case and you wouldnt even have drive?? its just wierd he said it runs perfectly fine except for reverse...
I know that it sounds crazy, but I have had two Explorers come into my shop. The first one had no reverse and we pulled the unit and I after taking it apart and didn't find any problem, rebuilt the unit, installed it to find it still didn't have reverse. I removed the transfer case and found that the planetary shift hub had just about stripped, I replaced the hub and resealed the transfer case and fixed reverse.
I can only think that turning the output shaft backwards it caused the teeth to push out and not hold. I didn't even hear any noises that concerned me.
When I have a Explorer 4x4 (especially transfer case BW4405 Control Trac) come in with no reverse I always check that because it was a painful lesson and its a easy check. The second one I caught before any work was done.
If I had to bet on yours I would say the is most likly a broken low band in your transmission, I see that way more.
ok geeeeez thanx alot man like i said he said he heard a noise when he was backin up then he lost reverse but everything else works great except for reverse....
