Hello to you all! My Dad is 81 years old and he drives a 1994 F150 4.9 litre automatic E40D tranny . He is a proud man and did not want to drive the truck with rust problems. I took two weeks off from work and brought this Ford back to its former glory AND more. Know he is experiencing problems with the transmission. My Dad said he put the tuck in reverse and backed up about 150 feet to pin his horse trailer, Put the truck In park got to check that he was properly placed to pin the trailer got back in put it in reverse and know no more reverse. The fallowing week I went to my dad’s I checked oil level, Ok. Started the truck up no check engine light . Put it in drive all forward gears work fine. But know the Kicker. I put the truck in reverse and it feels like the its in drive and reverse at the same time. Then I put the truck in neutral and it still moves forward and when In park you can tell that if it wasn’t for the park hook in the tranny it would move forward. When I did the body work I also did a complete makeover (tune up) Change transmission oil filter, diff oil Brakes Drums Rotors you name it I put at lest $4,500.00 in my dads truck. Transmission wise I replaced the servo with new gaskets and (solenoid pack Used from a good E40D tranny I had off 7.3 1995 diesel. The only thing I didn’t try yet is replacing the neutral switch. Any ideas any one .Ps I didn’t replace the neutral switch because I didn’t have it with me. It’s a 3 Hour drive to my dads.
Well, first off...welcome to the board.
Good to see another member from Quebec...where abouts are you?
I'm not sure of your level of experience with transmissions....could it be related to the service you did? ...what was the condition of the oil & filter you took out of it.
I think I would drop the pan and double check everything, if you haven't already.
If that's all good, I would then check all the connections on the tranny to make sure they are clean and seated properly. I've never heard of those symptoms with a bad mlps, but I'm no expert.
Hopefully, someone else will pipe in.
You can also post your problems in the tranny forum. You may get a quicker answer there???
It does appear to be a MLPS problem, but I do question the interchangeability of a solenoid pack from a diesel transmission.
The E4OD is completely electronic controlled. Always check for codes before replacing any parts. There can be a stored code without turning on the check engine light.
Hi Dave thanks for the input. I live on the south sore of Montreal in Richelieu. When I changed the oil in the transmission there was nothing abnormal the magnet had about 1/8 of wear and tear clinging to it but no metal. Before I replaced the servo (valve body) I took it apart removing the valves one by one and polished each one because there was some light scouring. Then put everything back together and went for a test drive. The tranny shifted smooth as silk. Put it in reverse and A OK. Tried it a few times then no reverse and the truck moved forward in neutral. In reverse it felt like the hand brake was on. So I thought that maybe the problem was because I didn’t replace the body valve gasket. That’s why the second time I replace the valve bode and gaskets hoping that it would resolve the problem. On my next trip I we be replaceing the MLPS (neutral switch) P.S. thanks Guys
Yes I took the valve body and accumulator *** , spacer plate apart to check for slime build up but and replaced the two spacer plate gaskets with new ones , making sure I installed the right ones with new check ***** 5/16 and one ¼ steel ball and torque to specs. Ps I have a daughter that lives in Gatinau a stone throw away from Ottawa. Have a good I'm off to work.
I don't know first hand..but have heard that those little check ***** can be a PITA and that the tiers shouldn't be seperated unless necessary. Sounds like you had a grip on that though....
Let us know what happens with the new mlps..
Thanks Dave, I'll be seeing my Dad On Saterday in Chenneville Qc I'll let you guys when I get Back. Ps I tried to post a picture of My Dads TOY F150 but I'm not a wis with computers. Have all a good Day and take care.
