This question is for my dad's 1998 Ranger w/ 162k miles. It's a 4.0L 5-spd manual 4x4. He had been starting to have problems with noise coming from the drivers side front when he turns the wheel to the left and moves in reverse. There is no noise if the wheel is turned and he moves forward. He descibes the sound as a "gritty, grinding" sound. He said that he checked the brakes and there didn't seem to be any problems. He's planning on dropping the truck off at the shop next week, but was wondering if there was anything specific that could be the problem.

Ask you dad if he has had the front bearings + hub/rotors retightened?
Sometimes a wheel hub/rotor can loosen just enough to have this "gritty, grinding" noise occur; rotor rubbing against brake pad when the tire is under pressure and being pushed or pulled!
