stuff like that adds lots to the final bill. Unless you can do some welding/body work i would suggest doing as much as you can before sending it away, also i would kind of check it for warpage etc. too before you send it out, even if its only checking for straightness by running hands over it (better to catch it now than after). theres nothing worse then spending a pile of dough on it to find a wave in it you couldn't see when it was flat but sticks out like a sore **** after its shiny.

Try to inquire if they do the triple plate method. You will get way better results and it will look better in the end. Some shops say they do it but only do double in order to save time (its a long process hence the cost). This kind of brings me back to the bodywork thing as if there are little discrepencies in the bodywork/piece it'll cost more to replate in copper as thats the ultimate filler to smooth things out so the more copper baths it gets the higher the price. Dont be afraid to shop around and compare at different shops too

Thanks for the advice Chris. We are new to this whole resto thing and any advice is excellent advice. I'm one of these people who will pay the extra to get it done right the first time. I'll get the grille out and have a good look at it later when I'm really awake. I'm only on my first cup of coffee!

Morris, as long as the grille I have is good, I'll stick with it. But if it's gonna be trouble I'll let you know. Thanks
Like I said I'm not a big fan of the gull wings. They just don't seem to look right, especially if the grille is chromed. When it's painted, they add a little to it.

Well the Hedman headers are in. Hubby got one of the old manifolds off which was actually in 3 pieces when the bolts come out. Actually all bolts but one came out. The head snapped off on one bolt so now the job to get it out. Lucky theres still some of it sticking out. Oh hubby just said one bolt broke on the other side too. Oh what fun!!!! MTF.

One good way to remove those broken exhaust manifold bolts is to weld a nut on if there`s enough sticking out to do so. Not only do you have a place to turn it with a wrench but also the heat will help to loosen the stuck bolt. Weld the nut on then let it cool right down to the touch and use lots of penetrating oil before carefully turning the wrench. It maybe still stuck hard but if once you can get it to start turning then it should come out nicely.

I hate swapping manifolds on "experienced" engines.

Not looking forward to it on any of my own!

Thanks for the tip Morris. I'll tell hubby to see if he can borrow the welder from work some day this week. I'm thinking that will be one of the next tools he needs for this project......
But so far he keeps saying he will borrow the mig welder from work whenever he needs it.

Sheldon, we are finding there's lots of things to "dislike" with experienced engines. Or maybe its just our inexperience... But it's all good. We are enjoying it so far. Worst part is living so far from a major city. It's hard to run from place to place to find what you need. I'm wondering how much extra we will spend over the course of this project with getting the wrong part or one that doesn't quite fit right. So as things move along, I'm sure there will be tons of questions for you guys!

Hopefully there is room to weld on the broken bolts, in some cases that`s pretty hard to do.

It looks like there is enough room. Hubbys has been spraying pentrating oil on it (I can't remember what the name is but it's something expensive anyway).
It will be a work in progress this week as he's on the midnight shift so he's all messed up with his sleep cycle.

My deepest sympathies to hubby, I really hate broken sleep cycles!
When you mention expensive it makes me think of ''Lock Tight''......
Make sure it`s actual penetrating oil!

Now Morris, he may not be a farmboy but he isn't stupid!

It worked on the rest of them so it must be the right stuff. It's expensive cause it says "environmentlly friendlier" (no kidding) on the can. Bumper to Bumper recommended it.

Hey, we`ve all done worse things by mistake, right..............
If you married a farm boy you`ve really, really got it made. Of course you must already knew that by now!
I`ve found that just cause something is expensive don`t mean it always works but I hope this does for you. Keep us posted.
