Our 1999 Expedition will not move. The indicator shows that the transmission is in gear. The speedometer indicates that the vehicle is moving, but it is sitting still. The transmission appears to have an adequate fluid level. Any suggestions on where to start?
Sounds like to blew the rear end. In order for the speedo to be going up, the ring gear has to be turning in the rear end. Might have blown a side gear inside.
I had tried in Reverse and Drive, but not First or Second. Also, my wife tells me the Overdrive light came on. she is not sure if she hit the button or not.
The speed is picked up at the tranny/transfer case. I think you will find it is in the area of the transfer case. I would look under it with the vehicle blocked when it thinks it is moving (speedo indicating) and look at the drive shafts. I have a feeling it is not getting to the drive shafts through the Transfer Case.
Alloro is correct, the speed on a 1999 is picked up at the rear diff (sensor is on the top of the diff) no sensor at transfer case or transmission . However if the rear diff is bad and the driveshaft is turning and the front wheels are not the traction control should kick in and pull the truck by the front wheels.
Thank you all for your input. The vehicle does not move in any gear even though the speedometer says it is. The driveshaft is connected and is not turning.
I just towed it out of the driveway and made the mistake of doing so with it running and in neutral so the power steering would work. While doing so I could hear a grinding noise and so turned off the engine thinking that possibly the transmission was partially engaged. Does this help to narrow down the source of the problem?
