Hey guys, new to the site, big ford fan and looking forward to learning more about ford trucks. anyone know or heard about delamination of the fuel tank?
First time i heard of it also.. my truck (04f350/6.0) was running horrible and i thought it was the cold weather gelling the fuel. my mechanic took a look at the fuel filters and couldn't believe how clogged up they were which also lead him to changing the fuel pump because it was over worked and on it's way out . Then he checked the tank a found that the top inside of the tank was flaking/dirty. i just got it back and seems to running good, but I should keep an eye on it and consider changing the tank in the future.
There is a product called Damon's Red Kote that is designed to make a liner inside of the fuel tank. I used to sell it for rusted fuel tanks when i worked at O'Reilly auto parts. It is a good product.
The tank is black plastic, but is lined with a gray material, at least on my '01 V10.
That could be what's coming off. Maybe too many weirdo additives used?
I had a problem this summer filling up with contaminated fuel at a gas station in NY, truck completely stopped running, had to change the whole fuel system minus the tank which i guess was cleaned out. lucky the insurance covered the $1400. to fix it. they said the fuel was mixed with home heating fuel. As far as adding additives i really don't use any except recently that it has been really cold, but this problem started before the cold weather.
I have heard of it as a problem for the E series vans with the diesel engine I believe. Don't think it's a problem on any of the trucks. If you do a search in here, or in the 6.0L forum I think you can find info.
