New to fords and just have a question about my 77 F150. It has two fuel doors on left side and the rear one is factory sealed in some manner. I am assuming this was for optional dual tanks but where was the second tank mounted ? My spare is between frame behind axle and the tank is a long one running lengthwise. Just curiouse; that's all.
The standard tank is mounted btwn the frame rails above the spare tire. The other longitudinal tank is a "saddle tank".
Btw, Ford got in a bit of trouble with the saddle tanks cuz the tank, unlike Chebbies which were mounted inside the frame rail, are unprotected with a side impact. It didn't garner as much attention as the exploding Pintos but there were a few deaths attributed to punctured saddle tanks.
If I'm reading the above post correctly, and no disrespect to HIO Silver, he is stating that Chevy tanks are inside the frame rails and Ford tanks are outside. I believe that just the opposite is true. Ford and Dodge contemplated doing that, but decided against it based on safety. Link below for more info.
You are correct 77 Supercab. Maybe some people put on aftermarket saddle tanks, but Ford didn't sell pickups with this style of gas tank. But back to OP's question. They may have included the doors for dual tanks, but one is sealed as you can see. The rear tank above the spare tire is the Aux tank, and the front tank inside the frame is the main tank. I never knew that until I started coming to this site.

What in the world? You have the info backwards! And...there is no such thing as Ford factory saddle tanks.
Saddle tanks mount on the right and left sides, were all aftermarket.
Ford: All auxillary tanks are mounted on the INSIDE of the left frame rail.
Open your peepers and take a look-see at any 1967/72 Styleside with one (optional) aux tank or 1973/79 Styleside w/one or two of these tanks.
Chevrolet/GMC: The fuel tanks are mounted on the OUTSIDE of the left frame rail, butted up against the bedside.
When these trucks were side swiped or T-boned, the tanks split open, gas poured out, some caught on fire...people burned to death.
An NBC-TV news program did a story on these Chevy/GMC's, showed what could happen, but it was later discovered that they FAKED the test.
But to people who owned these trucks, it wasn't fake when they caught fire after the tanks split open.
old rat: Styleside fuel tanks: 1967/76 F100/350's have exposed fuel caps. 1977/79's have fuel doors.
The fuel doors are the same as 1972/76 Lincoln Continental Mark IV & 1977/79 Lincoln Continental Mark V.
