I have a 1965 Ford F-100. I am interested in removing the seat fuel tank, and mounting a fuel tank under the cab area between the frame rails. I have considered using a Ranger style tank, and retain the stock fuel cap location and connect the fuel tank with a longer fuel hose. Has anyone done something like this? Any suggestions? Would the Ranger sending unit work, or must a stock one be used? How about mounting?
I am trying to do something simular. I want to put my tank under the rear of the bed. I know that I will have to get new fuel line & fill the hole for the filler but that shouldn't be to hard. Any sugestions about where to get the tank from would help. I want to mount the filler behind the rear tire.
I have been told but haven't tried it that the tank out of a early blazer (approx 71) will fit inbetween the frame rails. You will have to move the rea cross member back. I will be doing this hopefully soon.
I am having a custom made aluminum tank made for
my 65 F100 short bed F100.
The area just behind the rear end on the frame will allow a 20 gal tank using an after market
float and sending unit. I havn't figured out where
the filler tube is going yet. I have seen some
filler tubes through the bed floor with a trap door.
My idea is to keep the filler hole in the cab, but get rid of the tank behind the seat. I thought that a ranger style tank would work the best on fitting up in between the frame and the driveline, and still maintaining a comparable fuel capacity. I got the idea from the way the early 60's Studebaker pickups were set up.
Should I mount the tank to the frame or to the bed? Will the Ranger sending unit work with the rest of the factory Ford equipment.
JC Whitney has a tank that will fit in the back and all the stuff u need to do it with.. i havent tried it but was looking and saw that they sell tanks for aux and main.. check it out at least u will get an idea of a price.

I think that I would definately mount the tank to the frame and not the bed. 12 or more gallons of gas is quite a bit of wait, not to mention it seems like frame mounting is the way that seems to be what the manufactures have done...Let me know how the it goes.
I just drug home a 1970 f100 with a factory auxillary gas tank with a side mount sending unit. I am installing this unit in My 71 4x4 short box. The donor truck has a filler neck that sticks out behind the driver side door low on the lower bed panel .You have to cut the bed out , but there is a cover that hides all that on the donor truck. I am buying a lockable gas filler that sets flush like a factory unit.I dont know if new sending units are available though. I am leaving the old tank in the truck and will use it as a non potable water source when camping.
