tranny filter question

It tells me that the previous owner cared enough about his truck to add it.
We can't keep the fluids TOO clean, now, can we?
Since we don't change the fluid that often, it's all the more reason to filter it better.
The in-pan "filter" is not much more than a strainer, anyway.
I'd change the spin-on each time you change the tranny fluid.

Of course you can't keep it "too" clean. But you can cross into diminishing returns, and possibly overheat the tranny if that thing clogs for some reason. Dino fluid when it's cold gets thick enough to slow or even stop through the standard coolers, so I imagine it slowing even more (or sooner) with a filter inline. If the stock filter was that bad, we'd see more filter related issues, I would think. Keep in mind that Brian from BTS doesn't believe in auxiliary filtering either.

On my old PSD, when the tranny blew, the dealer installed an in-line tranny filter as part of their reman tranny TSB. Just a thought.

The filter that goes in the cooler line, near the radiator, is a magnetic filter. I don't think it really "screens" out any extremely small particles. I haven't seen the internals of one of these yet. I did install one on my stepson's old F150, after the TC shelled out, for "good measure".

This is taken from my Ford dvd manual:
If the transmission was overhauled and the vehicle was equipped with an in-line fluid filter, install a new in-line fluid filter.
If the transmission was overhauled and the vehicle was not equipped with an in-line fluid filter, install a new in-line fluid filter kit.
If the transmission is being installed for a non-internal repair, do not install an in-line filter or filter kit.
If installing a Ford-authorized remanufactured transmission, install the in-line transmission fluid filter that is supplied.
It not recommended to install one, if you have no transmission problems.
