I have a 2001 f-350 a/t 4x4 truck shifts fine from reverse to drive and runs fine on flat ground but if I back it down a boat ramp it will not shift into drive it stays in neutral until I rev the motor then it will start slipping until it make it to flat ground. Once I'm on flat ground let it sit for a minute and it will run fine. I've changed the fluid and filter it still does it.
That sounds like either low trans fluid or the internal filter isn't install right.
Mark, could this filter install problem explain a high reading on the stick when cold and a reading at the bottom of the stick when it is hot, or up to temp? Not to hijack, but could be relevant.
Maybe the pump in the trans is starting to go south. Or something not right in the valve body. What did the fluid look like when you changed it? Any burnt smell?

No, it couldn't. The filter has nothing to do with fluid level.
Low fluid when hot means you need to add some. High fluid when cold can mean the torque converter is draining into the pan when the engine is off. There is a check valve in the trans that is supposed to prevent this, but they can leak.
I was having trouble getting it into reverse, or going from reverse to drive. I had to rev the motor and then it would like slam into gear, HARD. So all i simply did was just changed the trans fluid and filter, added a quart of lucas, and it was golden. Haven't had a problem since.
The first time I changed the fluid and filter the fluid was dark but no burnt smell. I went and tried it did the same thing. So changed fluid and filter again thinking maybe it was the the wrong filter and it might have been sucking air when the truck was on a incline. but the pickup when to the bottom of pan. I've added a quart of lucas and even added a couple extra quarts of fluid still no change.
