I say drive it with the open pipe if you like the way it sounds. Be sure to reset your trip odometer so we can know how far you get before you get pulled over. I say in town 2 miles, rural maybe the second or third cop you see. I got pulled over in my 88 toyota with header, 2.25" cat, turbo muffler less than 10k miles old and full tailpipe. I'm still pissed 2 yrs later....but I digress
I put the FM44 on today.... very displeased I may say. Paid $94 for the ****in thing and i think its quieter than having my stock exhaust on!
Anyways, will running open 3" pipe hurt anything? (stock2.5 duals to a dual inlet, single 3" outlet from about 5" in front of O2)
With running straight pipes, a 3" should be plenty for a stock engine. Can't say as to whether or not you will get the sound you are looking for. On my '96 I've got true duals (with equalizer pipe) straights with 2" pipes back and then 2.25" tail pipes with 4" tips exiting at the rear corners. Its loud as hell but sounds damn good. I know what you guys are talking about by a straight-piped truck sounding like crap (like a mid 80s chevy with the exhaust falling off of it) but with the right combo you can make it sound pretty good. I ran a flowmaster super 40 2.25" dual in/dual out for a while, it sounded ok but wasn't loud enough . Maybe its just the redneck in me but generally speaking I think that trucks usually sound best with duals of some sort and a glasspack style muffler. Flowmasters and the like make them sound like a mustang...

I may just stick a glasspack down there again, just to have something for a lil backpressure. Hopefully its louder than this POS that I wasted 95 bucks on. But i was told that running just one straight 3" pipe would make the truck run bad because there wouldn't be enough backpressure. But IMO the truck sounded best with just the straight on it!! Idk... Ill figure something out. Thanks for the posts

No need to worry man, a motor does not need backpressure and will perform better with a better flowing exhaust system. There is no(zero) danger of doing any damage to the valves on an EFI motor by altering the exhaust system, The computer adjusts realtime for any change in temperature, barometric pressure, and airflow through the engine. Now a carbed motor is totally different, it can't self adjust so you could cause some damage if the carb isn't rejetted.

So its okay then and there is nothing that will happen to the motor from having no backpressure? If thats the case than that muffler's coming off tonight and going on Craighslist!!!
