Alright got my 4" exhaust today they gave me enough pipe to just bypass the Muffler completly. Louder is not what I am looking for I got it for the power gains and hopefully mileage improvements. the muffler is a straight flow thru design.
My question is will leaving the muffler off be a improvment on the exhaust in power and that? Or is it just going ot make it louder?
BTW, 2000 PSD on a F450 tow truck.

Reason: left out info
i dought it will make any noticeable improvment in power/mileage. it will make it louder. i have the same type of muffler and did not think it was that loud...until one day my wife was driving the truck and when she pulled out of the driveway, i thought "man that thing is pretty loud", plus she is a little bit of a lead foot
i think it is supposed to help the turbo wind up faster and lower the egt temps for the engine, as for the power gains i am not sure how much, i am interested to find out how much more power it will have. and i guess of course it will be louder with no muffler on it. hope this helps, i hope i am right with the info i gave you, but if i am not someone will correct me.
I've got a friend that installs propane injection and conversions for a living and he did some dyno testing on different exhaust set-ups. The results show no noticeable difference between the aftermarket straight-through mufflers and running a straight-pipe. I left my in, did gut the catalytic converter though and had some gains there.

I have personally done this to three PSD and of coure everyone of them got louder on the outside, but on the inside there was no noticeable difference unless you really laid into it.
as for helping the turbo wind up i also chopped out the cat on every one also and the thing will rev as fast as a gasser now. milage increased slightly when the cat was removed, you said you dont have a cat so you will not notice this, but to everyone else reading this, straight exhaust will give you an improvement on fuel by maybe 2 MPG if you are nice to it. i can now abtain 18MPG in a 7k truck with 4.10's and an auto. could only get about 14 when i bought it stock.
