Windshield leaking.

I just had my glass replaced and used a Dennis Carpenter Gasket. When it rains some water is getting through at each of the lower corners. The water is getting in between the glass and the windshield.

Does any one have a good way of fixing this that does not involve taking the glass out again?

I think you could use a rubber sealant, forcing it in and whipe off the excess. You could stop into a windshield shop like Apple autoglass and see what they suggest, and it probably wouldn't cost that much for them to do it.

For the '48-52 the shop manual recommends applying rubber glue in the channel before installing the window. I didn't and have the same problem as you in my '49. I would also suggest trying a rubber sealer but you have to be careful that you don't use something that will fog up the windshield. I would talk to a place that installs auto glass. This might be a problem though, I've found a lot of the auto glass places don't know much about installing glass in old vehicle, you'll have to make sure the person you talk knows his stuff.

Same problem in my '54 but only on the left side (since my truck leans to the left!) No rubber sealant was put in, I too read somewhere, afterwards, that a bead of sealant should be put on before you put the glass in. An auto glass guy did try to add some afterwards and it helped but did not totally stop it. I just live with it and the truck doesn't see a lot of rain like it used to.

I had the same problem with my 49. Leaked at the bottom corners. I took it to an old time glass shop and they pulled the windshield out. It did not have any sealer on it. They put sealer all around and reinstalled it. No problems since. It didn't take them more than 30 min and most of that was cleaning up the extra sealer that squeezed out. Cost was minimal. I was really glad that I didn't fool around with it.

Same problem, I bought some windshield sealer from Napa and put it in the corners without removing the windshield. That was several years ago and it worked well. Only problem now is the windshield wipers are leaking down the center pivot shafts.

Thank you everyone. I'll see if I can squeeze some windshield sealer in the corners.

You'll probably have to go all the way around both on the outer part of the seal and the inner. Just because it is draining out the lower corners, doesn't mean it's coming through there.

If your leak is on the top of the windshield, it will seep in then travel to the lower corners and eventually fill up or flow out higher up. that will cause some serious rust problems eventually.

Good Luck,
Julie

Julie is right about this.
Remember water runs downhill.
Do it right the first time.
