I have 148,000 on Nyx and I'm assuming the stock transmission. Any reason I should not switch to synthetic? I'm about due for a tranny flush & filter change. IIRC doesn't Brian (of BTS) recommend it for a new/rebuilt tranny but not a high mileage one?
I switched to syn at 160K and have had no problems (I'm at 172K now). The tranny is smooth and shifts great (I put in a FTVB when I did the flush). Now if I can just find some time to grease my slip yoke (again) I'll be smooth as silk!

I think you are referring to the power flush that a shop or dealership does. When you pressurize the system is when you run into problems, especially on our older trannies. IMO you should be fine with just the flush.
Brain42, I see you are in San Diego, do you have any advice on where I can get a competent flush performed? I have 90k miles on my 4r100 which I bought used at 50k miles and have not changed the the fluid yet myself. It sounds like a messier job than I care to attempt in my short and inclined driveway.
Also, I'd like to change the pan with the cooler fin style, any suggestions on on a plain jane style pan with colling fins and a drain plug? I don't need all that bling, just function.
You don't need a pan with fins. They are only bling, there is no function. You can't cool a trans with a pan that has fins or more capacity. You need a better cooler to improve cooling. Get a cooler from a 6.0L truck. That's the way to improve cooling.
I think your are on the right track Kovalsky. I just climbed udner my truck again ant he pan already has a drain plug. I remember reading that the 4r100's did not have one from the factory so is there a good chance my tranny was serviced by the original owner or is my brain fried? The pan is stamped METRIC on the bottom , there are many contours, and there are no other part numbers I can see. It also has a stamp with the fact is has a reusable seal.
Ford dealer gave me a $200 estimate for a flush to switch to Mercon V. Still not comfy with the inconsistant methods that are being described. I don't have money to waste but need to get this done as I checke dthe levels and the fluid is at the bottom of the dipstick zone.
I think I used 5/8" tubing from Home Depot to do it (and a hose clamp). I only used a few feet, but I'm stock height so you might want 4-5 feet to reach whatever container you're using to catch the fluid.
I'd definitely put down a lot of cardboard under the truck. It's easier to dispose of cardboard than clean ATF stains from your driveway (and it's easier to slide on).
I don't know about the shallow pan, but the 4x4 pan comes with a drain plug.
