Another transmission fluid capacity?

I was wondering, everywhere I look it shows that our transmissions hold around 17 quarts, but there are 2 factory pans. One is a deep pan an the other is normal or shallow. What are the fluid capacities difference between these?

I am asking since I just changed my fluid my removing the pan and draining the TC. Then I added 2 coolers (OTW in the radiator and upgraded to the 6.0 cooler) I had a fill tube problem and did spill some fluid (maybe 1/2 quart) and the trans is overfull and I did not even get 17 quarts in it. I put the truck in the gears several times and let it run for some time to fill the TC. I did install the coolers and flushed them with the old fluid that was in the pan and then flushed with 2 additional quarts. So the coolers did have fluid in them, but the 6.0 cooler is mounted so that with the return hose off it will drain by gravity.

Could I get the level correct by driving the truck and then draining the pan and then add 5 quarts???

That's incorrect. There is one pan. The older E4OD had a shallower pan for the 4x2, but starting with the 1999 models that went away. All 4R100 transmissions in the Superdutys had the deeper pan.

And just for reference the difference was less than a quart.

That will probably leave you a quart or two low.

You can buy a hand suction pump for about $5-$10 at any auto parts store. Using a hose pump some fluid out of the dipstick tube to get the level right.

I used to just disconnect a cooler line and run out the amount of fluid needed.

The transmission pan has a drain plug. If overfull, just remove the plug and drain a little out.
