Automatic column question

ok, so on the automatic steering columns, the gear indicator, can't remember the official name at the moment, but it's clear and the needle is the back, well anyways, when you turn your headlights on is it supposed to light up? if so then mines busted and I'll have to replace the bulb or whatever needs to be done when I put in the new turn signal switch. oh! also, with the horns, as we all know they break! haha, well, when the plastic piece holding the ring on broke there's a little spring and small button that are in the lower left side I believe, can you replace these parts? cuz they shot out and I have no idea what happened to them!

The gear indicator is called the PRNDL inticator (pronounced "prendel"). Don't know if you can still get these parts.

I had mine apart not too long ago and I didn't see any place for a light to go. Could have been a Ranger or CS option? CS65 would know but sure would be nice as it's a little hard to see on stormy nights.

How could a bulb work?

The dial screws into the backside of the upper steering column flange, there is no place in the flange for a bulb to shine thru, there is no wire in the steering column for a bulb.

And...there is no shift indicator dial bulb listed in the parts catalog...because none of these trucks had it.

The 1967/72's didn't have one either.

Don (cs65) has the same parts catalog I do...look here: Illustration-Section 35, page 8. All the steering column parts are shown in an exploded view.

No bulb, no bulb socket, no wire.

Well I know that Bill I had it apart! thought there might have been an add on or something. I would have been better to see with a black background and a white indicator though but I guess these were designed in the daylight since alot of us seem to have lighting issues of one sort or another.

Back them things were simple. There were NO mandatory Fed safety standards except for one thing = safety glass was required in all the windows in all vehicles. That law dated back to the early 1930's.

Lap seat belts were optional, there were no shoulder harness seat belts available.

Outside mirrors were optional. There were no lock ***** on the doors.

Peeps tend to compare these STONE AGE trucks with what's built today.

FAQ's.

They wonder if an AM/FM/Cassette radio was available. None till 1973.

Where's the CD fit? It wasn't invented yet. No power plug for a cellphone, cuz it wasn't invented yet, either.

Were power windows and seat available? There were none till 1981.

What's wrong with my parking lights? They go off when the headlights are turned on. That's the way they are supposed to work.

Disc brakes available? Not till 1973 (F100's).

How do you work the tilt wheel? None till 1975.

Where was the cruise control device? See tilt wheel.

Power steering and power drum brakes were available...as a dealer installed accessory. 95% of the trucks had neither.

Emergency flashers were optional. Very few 1964's had them, 1965, see 1964. About 25% of the 1966's had them, they were standard equipment in 1967.

Comparing a 1965 with a 2005 is like night and day.

But...none of these old piles have on-board computers and all the electronic emission valves/switches, none of the fuel related electronic valves/switches (crap) that's hard to diagnose when something goes amiss, and expensive to fix when you do figure out what's wrong.

Don't take my word for it...see all the questions pertaining to this crap asked EVERY DAY in the 1980 and later truck forums.

All too true Bill. So could you get the flasher out of say a 67 and fit them in the 65 or was that a specific add on for the 56-6 only. I know you have them it would be nice to have just in case.

1964 is different, 1965 is different, 1966 is different, 1967 is different.

1968/72 is the same.

Talk about in-convienence...the 1967 & 1968/72 flasher switches are located...inside the glove box!

You need ape arms to reach it.

Great so I'd prolly have to go with an aftermarket thing unless I could find one on an old rig around here. Was the truck wired for this specifically or was it just a kit Thanks Bill

It was available two ways...factory installed or as a dealer installed accessory kit.
