Have a 86 150 that will not start. The key turns but will not make the truck start. You can use a screw driver and jump from the solinoid to the battery and make it start. I have replaced the starter solinoid on wheel well, ignition switch on column, and key switch on column. Also the neutral switch has been replaced. Anyone ever had this problem and if so what was wrong.
I had a similar problem on my dads 1969 F-250. Turned out to be a bad ground. I took off the soleniod, and cleaned the metal behind it with steel wool.
Starts every time now.
Hope this helps,
Rick
Don't forget about the ignition actuator. Does the key do anything when you turn it (cranking etc.), or is it just dead? If the ignition actuator inside the column is broken the key will turn but nothing will happen; NOTHING. But, if the truck cranks it wouldn't be related to the ignition actuator. The actuator is connected to a metal rod that runs down the top of the steering column and trips the ignition switch (also located on the top and bottom of the steering column. (The ignition switch is controlled by the position of the key) When the actuator (a small cresent shaped piece of cast aluminum) breaks, the ignition switch gets stuck in whatever position it was in when it breaks. The first time I broke one, the truck was running and it took me a while to figure out what the heck was going on. The part is only about 9 bucks. However, the labor on it is about 150 bucks. You can do it yourself, but there are a lot of tricky things to watch for when disassembling a steering wheel and column. But hey, if I can do it anyone can. Hope this is some help to you, if not thanks for listening anyway.
