Hey guys, I just recently purchased a 2006 f-250 king ranch powerstroke and having previously owned a 97 powerstroke with the e40d transmission in it are there typical problems, items to watch out for or words of advise regarding the torqshift transmission behind a 6.0 psd?
The only things I would suggest are 1. Never put anything other than Mercon SP fluid in it. And 2. Always use the tow/haul button while towing. My 05 has 124,000 mostly towing miles and it still shifts like it's new. It is a great transmission. Good Luck
The 5R110 is the best tranny in the segment. Yes, its better than the Allison. When properly tuned, these trannies can hold upwards of 600-650 rwhp and survive. They are great transmissions and like mentioned above, only Mercon SP! The 04's had an issue with bad snap rings (I think, someone correct me if im wrong) but that was resolved.
The external filter (FT-145 or part # 3C3Z-7B155-BA OR aftermarket filter NTZ09-C09B) is behind the passenger side front bumper. I used an impact wrench to get the filter housing off to avoid twisting lines. It takes a 7/8" socket. You will lose very little fluid through changing the filter - only a few ounces.
To change the fluid, you can either drop the pan, drain, and refill, or you can flush it. If you have it flushed, it must be done with a heated machine (170 *F minimum) to open up the internal thermostat (more than 90%) to get the torque converter flushed also.
<TABLE width="100%" border=0><TBODY><TR><TD vAlign=top>If you drop the pan and the internal screen is clean, do not change. It only stops trees and boulders. Gasket is reuseable if not damaged.

As was said ....... it is a great transmission! Also - do not switch "to and from" Reverse without stopping completely. It needs just the basic care and PM and it should treat you very well.
The torqshift is a great tranny. It's probably the least discussed item on this board from a problem perspective. Additionally, the tow/haul function in connection with the 6.0 is awesome.
I just hit 60k miles and am trying to decide whether to flush or drain and fill along with replacing the external filter. I had the dealer flush it at 30k and have only towed a couple times (6000 lbs) in the last 30k. Decisions, decisions.
I believe the book says to change your tranny fluid every 30,000. Shouldn't even have to ask the question....look at your users manual. If you don't have it, it's downloadable from Ford's web site.
Well it sounds like ford made up for the problems with the E4OD. It is a good thing to know that this is a very stout tranny. My truck has 70k milies on it and from what I can tell I don't think it ever towed a thing before I bought it. All the miles are Nebraska and Iowa open road miles. It does seem to shift slow compared to my 97 f-250 which had nice quick firm shifts. All the info is great I hope this truck is as solid and strong as my 97.
I have always been taught this AND just recently was told it again by the person that upgraded my son's 7.3L tranny. He said that this was the most common way to damage a transmission. I never checked into the mechanism for damage - hmmm, usually I am more curious than that. I guess I will have to get a technical answer from him when we go get my son's dptuner adjusted slightly for better shifts w/ the new tranny.
BTW - the owners manual states to come to a complete stop before shifting into reverse. It also states to not "rock" between Reverse and Drive for more than 1 minute or damage may occur.
Well I have an 05. I have 44870 on my truck. I just spent $5,483.52 on a rebuild. Yes I thnk the snap ring is now fixed in anything after 02/05 but that didnt help me. It was recalled if you had the plow package. It is the same trans and everything but an option changes something, I dont think so. Ford should have repalced eveyone of the snap rings that were bad. Not just some lame excuse if you have a plow. My snap ring broke and took the case with it as well as smoe metal that went through a bunch of things. I am not happy at all. A truck with such low miles should not have this problem and expense. As you can see from my pictures. I take very good care of my truck and give it everything it need and more.

Sorry to hear of your expensive troubles. One thing to consider would be send an email to Ford complaining about it. My son has a 2005 F150 and just spent $600 to get the spark plugs changed due to a poor design. Ford approved some compensation and referred him to the dealership that did the work. He ended up with $150 credit. Still should not have happened - but every little bit helps.
I had been looking for the year that they fixed the snap ring. I thought it was in 04 - so thanks for the post.
The snap ring issue only affected 05's (w/ snow plow package) according to the info I have. The reasoning (according to Ford) behind the focus on the snow plow package equipped trucks is it is common for them to repeatedly and sometimes rapidly shift between forward and reverse which could cause the snap ring to rotate out of position and become unseated. It affected diesels from '05 Job 1 through 01/12/05 and gassers from '05 Job 1 through 01/14/05.
The issue with the 04's involved replacement of the reverse planet assembly due to low/reverse gear set pinion shaft(s) that may walk out. Vehicles affected were built from 03/08/04 through 06/24/04.

Ironically, mine was built 1-11-04, so it sounds like I am safe. I wonder what to get my baby for her 5th birthday today? The bad part, is that the 5 year 100,000 mile warranty just expired, I guess it's time for that EGR delete!
Sorry, not trying to hijack the thread, just got carried away.
