Do you prefer the Ford Torqshift or the Dodge NV5600?

The market for manual transmissions in big rigs is shrinking at a rate of 2% per year:

For what it's worth, the NV5600 is rated for 550 ft.lbs. of torque and the Cummins makes 600 ft. lbs. Sounds like trouble...

How is this poll even relevant - comparing an automatic to a manual? People in the market for an automatic will look at Ford auto vs. Dodge auto; those in the market for a manual will compare the Ford manual to the Dodge manual...

I think it's very relevant, it will show that a lot more people are comfortable with an automatic now than some consumers would have you believe, and it will show that the Ford is a better truck, even when their auto is matched against Dodge's manual.

I have just read that Dodge is getting a new Getrag 6-speed to replace the NV5600. It will be in 2005 models, but I am not too sure when it will be available.

Its comparing apples to oranges you have to compare the same type of trannsmissions. Im sure this will turn into another huge auto vs manual debate......again.

I prefer manuals. I am of the opinion that the nv5600 is the most reliable transmission on the market. If I am correct, which happens often, then how is it problematic. I would venture to say. The nv5600 has been less problematic than the 6.0 engine.

I think the 6.0 PSD is better suited with the auto. It seems to underperform with a manual.

A 6-speed has enough ratios for most anything a medium-duty truck will encounter
Long live the 6 speed.

Is it possible to add some mild hp enhancements to the Torqueshift without causing damage. Say. Less than 90hp. Yes. So in essence you can, with some margin of safety, uprate an engine past the transmissions rated input torque. Heresy you say. We do it all the time. High flow exhausts. High flow air filters. Mild chips. We push the envelope every day. If you do any of these you are making more torque at the flywheel than your tranny is rated for. So whatcha gonna do.
The ZF is rated for 520. What are we up to now. 570.

The nv5600 is rated to 550lb ft. But. It can with a relative margin of safety. Handle 1000lb ft with no internal mods. You need a clutch that can sustain that amount of torque and thats it. The mildest uprates bump the cummins up to 750-800lb ft of torque. Anyone who uprates is well beyond the 550 rating. Yet this transmission has proven to be bulletproof. Above 1200lb ft in extreme situations. Like sled pulling. You would need to replace the input and output shafts. This tranny is unbelievably durable. The most durable on the market.
It will outlast and put more hp to the ground than any auto on the market. But its slower and being the fastest is all that matters. As we all know.

You know holset made a little turbocharger used on the 99 or so cummins. It was rated to run 25 psi safely. Everybody bombed the poop out of it and it was found to be uncannily reliable. Holset took notice and rased the rating of the turbocharger. Saying it could push 32 psi safely. The market was changed by the aftermarket. They discovered it was way more reliable than they thought. So they upped the rating.

That's for the ZF-5--using old numbers again???? The ZF-6 is up to 600.

I have seen numerous NV's puke their guts at the sled--they are not as good as you say they are. They will take 640 that's about their limit--with out mods. The ZF-6's are good to about 700. The old ZF-5 is good for about 630.

How about an F350 with a Cummins with a better lift and injector pump, NV5600 and made in Japan. That's what I want.
