I have an E4OD with 40K miles on a fresh rebuild. when at operating temp, the trans will not shift out of first, until i rev it high then let off, or go all out. when it shifts going all out, i believe it skips 2nd and goes straight into 3rd. I read that an intermediate clutch pack could be causing this problem.
on top of that, when in OD when hot, it will not pull out of OD when the button is pressed. it will stay in OD until it revs down to ~900RPM then will violently go into first, over-rev, and go back into 4thOD, back and forth till i have to pull over and start over.
took it to a (bad) oil changer where they just sucked the fluid out with an evacuator, and re-filled it. still problems persist. he did say though that he picked up chunks of black stuff, which could be remnants of the clutch.
Any input on this problem is appreciated.
PS, hey im over from the ORG. seeing if another forum can give me any help.
Hello Yall!
PSS I cant find how to fill out my sig. its a 1996 F350 CC LB
Welcome to FTE stick around and im sure someone will come up with the answer. I am by no means a guru but one thing that i seem to read about fairly often is the TRS (transmission range sensor i believe). But someone else will be along with a more definitive answer
No tranny guru here, but I'll bump you back near the top. When they did the rebuild, did they install an inline filter like a Magnafine in the cooler hose? If so, I'd change it out, then cut the old one open to see if there are any more "chunks of black stuff" in there.
Are you running a chip in the truck? Have you installed a shift kit or anything? My experience has been if you take it to a shop that just drops in a rebuild, it's a crapshoot at best.
I believe it's 25 posts before you can have a sig.
first question is do you have a warrenty on the tranny? I do not believe so. I am second owner of rebuilt tranny in the truck.
second is did this happen all at once or get progressively worse? any other issues up until this problem? Progressively got worse, about 2 months ago, it started with not coming out of OD.
what does it do when the fluid is cold? Works fine, not one problem. although at steady 3/4 pedal, the 1-2 shift is alittle softer than all the rest, OD disengage works fine.
why did you get the tranny overhauled to begin with? Previous owner did it. Truck has 210K miles.
is it a remanned trans or did you get the origonal unit overhauled? I do not know. All documentation shows Carquest: E4OD xxxxxxxxxxx (S/N i believe). sales sheet on the window and craigslist said Rebuilt E4OD transmission 33K miles ago with new HD torque converter.
it really sounds like its time to remove the tranny again
I have NO tranny experience. Im going to take it to a shop.
I have an auto but not a guru on it....If you are going to have it rebuilt I would be looking into a BTS,john woods or racerx for it since they all specialize in these....I will be going to BTS as a personal pref.

I'm no tranny expert either but just changing the oil and not the filter is a bad idea IMO. Drop the pan, change the filter, refill and see if it gets better. It's easy and cheap so it's not that much of a gamble.....maybe $30-35.
I seriously doubt they "picked up chunks of black stuff". Did they show them to you? IIRC the fluid is filtered before it leaves the trans.

Yes, the pan needs to be dropped so you can clean all the gunk off the magnet as well.
Im not going BTS. i dont have $4000. If its the intermediate clutch, its 700. and all im gonna run is stage 1 rosewoods. the trans should handle that.
im gonna take it to golden gate transmissions. have them look at it for free. no point in re-doing the fluid iif there gonna change it when there in there anyways.
Last time I called Brian's, the base price was $4100 + you shipping your tranny there and him shipping it back. Are you in Cali? Then I would say it would be closer to $5000 if you can't drive there and let him install it.
If the place you had the oil changed really did find black chunks of something, then I would be willing to bet you'll be into it for more than just an intermediate clutch.
When I knew mine was going out, I took some time and talked to ALOT of tranny shops around town (after I decided I couldn't afford a BTS), and found a small shop with a great reputation, no b.s., and a solid warranty. They are hard to find, but they are out there.
I guess you have previous experience with Golden Gate. I don't. I had mine done by Shucks in Dublin. I wouldn't recommend them. A little over three grand for the rebuild. Time will tell on reliability. PM me if you need some hands on help or advice. I'm in San Ramon.
with the issues you are describing, lack of history on the tranny, amount of time you have been driving it like that, throwing a single component at it would be ridculous in my opinion. slipping shifts when cold, no gears when hot? think about what you are saying you want to do..... the fragments of whatever let loose have been traveling all over your tranny, all through the other clutches, all through the thrust washers....... you would be wasting your time and money to do what you suggested. odd are that is exactly what the place did that overhauled it, simply replaced a lone damaged clutch or band, didnt do a proper overhaul. but its your money and your truck so all i can do is offer advice
I talked to Kwik Shift, no good. My shop teacher, Mike Spragge recommended golden gate. when he worked for ford, and had his honda shop, thats where he would send all of his trannys.
pjwoolw i was just there tonight at zacharys pizza! well have to do a GTG some time.
coonhunter, well have to see what they say... i think theres gonna be a lot of problems.
