Hey--
I would be able to give you a better opinion if I knew what engine you are planning to run a new exhaust setup on...
But I have a flowmaster 40 original on my f-150 with the 351w and it sounds great. A nice deep tone and not annoyingly loud. Reply back with some more information and I'm sure other guys can help you out as well.
I have a set of new 40 series on my 77 and I have no problem with Too much noise-----For overall sound and reasonance the 40 series is the BEST , and the quality of construction is the BEST as well in my opinion------You get what you pay for -----If you want "Cheap" you'll get a system that won't last very long and you'll be right back at the muffler shop doing it all over again , good luck.......fd
I thought the topic was whether the 40 Original was better than the 30 Series. I don't think u can beat the 40 original. It seems the be the most popular muffler in the FM Series. My problem was finding a 3" single I/O offset. They stopped making them 2 years ago. Only have DF's. Don't want DF's. The tech guy tried his best too sell it too me. He didn't think I would see any more improvement in the DF's compared to the 40 Original. When I told him about my mods he then kinda took it back. The guy told me to take a 21/2" 40 Original and have the muffler shop open it to 3" since all inner chambers are 3" anyways. Wasn't too hip to that? The 30 Series was his next recommendation. He then went over the 50 Series. Liked the power chamber in the 30 Series. Not impressed w/ the sound of the 50. Eventhough charts list the 50 being louder than the 30 on most retailer web sites the chart at the flowmaster site and the technician have the 30 being louder. I preferred the 30 series sound bite over the 50. I made the plunge and ordered the 30 Series. Had to put it on B/O since were out of stock. Will undoubtably get it any day now by drop shipment from FM like I did the cat-bak. Just can't wait to get that 70 Series off!
the 40 series on a 302 is a very nice sound. I have them on a 95 Cobra stang with a 302 and it is nice and rumbly. If I were you i would get the centered inlet and centered outlet as well. That car makes one of the prettiest sounds I have ever heard. When it starts a lot of people look around to see what's goin on becaause it has a very powerful "bark" to it.
