Hello, I just purschased a 1978 Ford 4X4 460 and it has dual exhaust that exit in front of the rear tires. I want to install 40 series flowmasters. Being that it is a big block will the flowmasters sound okay with out tail pipes?? Or will I have a lot of flutter. I was afraid that if i ran tail pipes, I would lose alot of the deep tones. Any thoughts? Thanks!
Thanks for the input. I had a diesel and put on flowmasters.. YUCK.. A friend of mine has a 87 dodge 361 gasser. They sound great! This 460 should really make them growl.. I was just debating the option of keeping them in front of the rear tires or installing tail pipes. I like the deep cab noise.. Thanks guys! greatly appreciated
noise in the cab is iffy. i hear alot of people say that it makes alot of noise that way but i have 79 with efi 460 has 40 series mufflers with no tail pipes and i honestly dont think they are very loud. my tires make more noise than my exhaust when i am driving down the road. and when at cruising speed i dont even hear the engine. im taking these off and putting them on one of my broncos and ill go with single chambers for the big block... maybe then ill be able to ehar them when im driving...
I have Original 40 series run off of my 360 and the mufflers are right behind the cab and tialpipes exiting in front of my rear tires. My cab nosie is not that bad but in the summer my gas mileage goes way down when my windows are down. It will raises cops attention to , but what can a fella do.

Sounds pretty good but I dont want to be obnoxiously loud.. but Im looking for that low, deep rumble. Im all for "attention grabbing" 40 series. Just not looking for a free ticket either Ha! With my experience before with flowmasters, Ive always had tailpipes with 2 1/4 inch pipe. It took some of the deepness away. I might try your set up since my old exhaust exits in front of the rears. Less cost.. who knows! I may LOVE IT!! Thanks for your posting. Rbuller24
My friend at school has a 85 Chevy with a 350 bored out to a 383 and has flowmaster single chamber 40 series with out tail pipes and turn downs and it sounds so damn good. Its so loud it shakes the windows in the school when he drives by
