i have an 02 with a banks cat back, and im not totally thrilled with the sound. i was wondering if anyone has opinions on the flowmaster 40, and could i just buy the muffler and install it to my banks pipes?
I put one on my stock 99. The pipes still looked good and had good clean bends so I just had the muffler replaced. I went with the stock exit point and its really not as loud as I want it but it does get some attention.
between the 40 series and 50 series, it's a toss up. both have a great rumble to them!! its more of what you want, or don't want to hear. the 40series will be louder in cab, the 50 will have a good tone, and less interior noise. the super 44's have a smaller case, and slightly less interior noise (from what i've been told). the 70 series is a good upgrade from factory, with slightly more rumble than stock, and little to no interior noise!
i just installed a super 44 on my v10 X with the stans headers y pipe. definately loud in the truck. actually rattles the plastic panels.and a 4 1/2" stainless tip.

You didnt even have to buy the whols banks kit, our trucks come with 3" tubeing from the factory, all you needed to do was change the muffler and maybe throw a tip on the end, saves alot of cash. BTW I am running the FM 50 series and like it fine.
i have all stock manifolds. the only thing i did was cut out the old y pipe, muffler, and tip. replaced them with the super 44, bigger y pipe, and bigger tip. i dont really notice any power difference. no real flutter. alot louder though. i like it alot.
I have a super 40 with duals at the muffler and 5" cans. Sounds great with no drone and not too much interior noise.
Flowmaster says the super 44 is the most aggressive yet. I put a super 44 on my Wrangler and it is tame. The engine out does the muffler at 3000 rpms. Good start up rumble but that is about it. I know, diff engine but still. I know I can cut of some of the tail pipe on the jeep to increase the noise but...biggest diff between the 40 and 44 is thickness. 44 is 4" while 40 is 5".
I suggest an FM50 SUV muffler. Its got more growl to it than then banks, is a hair milder than the the 40 series but it has more volume and anti-drone chambers which is better suited for a tow vehicle. Banks uses a 3.5" tailpipe, you can use a 3" muffler just have a muffler shop with a hydrauilic pipe expander open up the outlet of the muffler to fit inside the banks tailpipe.
I just had a super 40 put on my 460 in the place of the stock muffler with out tips(yet im going to get the ones with resonators ) and the only time i can even here my exhaust is when my rpms are really low because it is quit enough that my motor noise will drone out the exhaust. I would not recommend them if you are going for something loud.
