Well i broke my timing cover while doing my water pump... i feel like an ***....Luckily Mike (friend) gave me another 460 timing cover. But i cannot get the crank bolt loose... i have tried everything but my impact gun. Tried using the starter and keeping the breaker bar in one place but i was not strong enough to get the breaker bar to stay in one place. If i take my impact i am worried it is not going to have enough power to get it broken loose either.
I have a piston stop, but i have always heard to no use one to "lock" up the engine while trying to loosen something that is part of the rotating assembly. What is another way to lock up the engine so i can break this bolt loose?
And my other question is. Mike gave me a timing cover with a fuel pump place on it. My truck is EFI, so i was wondering if i can just cut a piece of steel and make a gasket for it and call that good, or if I need an EFI one.
I used an impact wrench to get mine off. It worked great. It wont hurt anything to try. If you have a low buck model, it might not have enough power. Borrow one with more power. My wrench does 700 ft/bs for removal.
You could also drill two holes in a long piece of flat stock, bolt that to two of the pulley bolt holes (on one side, leaving the center hole open) and it'll rest against the frame keeping everything from rotating as you use your breaker bar to remove the pulley bolt.

I think mine is good for 240... so i might have a chance... guess thats what ill try tommorow.... working on the truck is a PITA, because it wont clear the garage door and its too long.... so i get to do it in the rocks.... thanks
I used my 3/8 impact on my 5.8 the other night, i didnt want to take the fan/shroud out to use my 1/2 impact. My 3/8 impact is like 200lbs so any 1/2 will work.
After soaking it in PB blaster, spray some WD40 on it right before you go to take it off. The WD lubricates it after the PB gets rid of some of the rust.
Got the harmonic balancer off... but now tere is a pie shaped thing held on with a keyway. How is the best way to get this keyway off? thats the only thing hanging me up right now. Thanks guys
