newb here ive got a 73 390FE and just wonder how to find out if its an S code. there is a big S cast into the intake manifold is this it? i figure its not an S code since theres not a S with the block numbers which are D3TE and it has a 105 i think it is under the oil filter. also what does the S code really mean? thanksabunch
Should be a standard 390 but its not junk or uncapable. Some intakes are "T" castings and some just use casting numbers. The "S" and "T" are similar performance wise but the "S" has a bit more value in my opinion.
The (whatever) code you hear people talking about is usually the digit in the VIN that denotes what engine the factory installed. It's more of a pedigree thing for car owners.
The "S" intake is a good stock part to have. It has runners that are smaller than earlier versions. I have seen versions for both 2V and 4V carbs.
I have the 4V intake, it was on the 390 that came in my truck. I would get 10 to 12 MPG with it. 12 MPG does not sound impressive, but it is about 25% better economy than the 2V intake on the current engine.

The T only came on trucks and S on cars.
Don't know the truth but I have heard many repete that the Edelbrock Performer is copied from the S.
thanks guys. i figured the s just meant the intake. and yeah mine is the 4V one also and with a edelbrock performer 600cfm carb im gettin around 10-12 on the highway and up to about 15-17 on the freeway. im probably goin to get a performer rpm intake and just store the original one for if i want to put it back on someday.
