Hi all. I dropped my oil pump extension today while trying to put my dizzy in. Any grand ideas about how to get it back out of the oilpan without a hole lot of hassles. Been tryit the coathanger trick and now am started with a magnet to see if I can recover it. Intake manifold is on. Timing gear cover is not yet on as well as numerous other parts in front of engine. Any wise Ideas or great ones? on how to recover the oil pump shaft?
If your lucky the magnet will work, its a one in a million chance though. The only sure way that I know of is to pull the oil pan and fish it out that way. If I was you I would do what is needed to get it out, but some guys leave it sitting in the pan.
I got the shaft out with a magnet. Now what is my best option to get it all in place without losing the shaft again. I dont want to put in tape or such that I can not get out again. All answers will be given due thought and careful usage. thanks
Use gasket sealer or permatex to "glue" the shaft into the dist so it won't fall out this time. For correct installation, the shaft should be installed in the oil pump before install with a keeper on the shaft to prevent it from coming out with the dist.
Thanks Bear. I did use some gasket sealer on it last night and will try to put it in today. I never had the pan or pump off. When I originally pulled the dizzy it stayed in as it should have. I was having a few issues getting everything to line up installing the dizzy. I decided to pull it out and see what may be happening. As I pulled the dizzy up it made that sickening tinkle sound as it waved bye bye. Hopefully with your suggestion and a little luck all will go well today.
I'll be pulling my heads this spring on my 352 is this something I should be worried about happening? Why would it fall all the way through I don't get that if he glues it isn't it going to fall right through eventually? Fill me in please as I must be missing something.
If installed properly the oil pump drive shaft will stay in tha motor as it was designed to. In operation the shaft is captive between the dist and the oil pump.
I have used grease in the past. Vaseline smushed in and forms a seal that makes it removable, but not likely to fall out when installing the distributor.
