I've been thinking of taking the cat off my 6.0 ( or at least take the guts out so it will pass inspection)- anyone else did this and have any better mileage or anything. I can't seem to understand why you would want to restrict the exhaust like they do.

You'll see a reduction in EGTs and a louder exhaust(especially if the muffler is gone as well), but those are really the only benefits to this. We aren't talking about the cats of decades past that were robbing a godawful amount of HP, these are pretty efficient compared to those.
I have had my cat off,,you can look right through it,,,looks like some kind of a screen in there. out of the cat,,the pipe goes to 3.5",,,I rather simply(have to jack the truck up) removed the tailpipe and muffler,,installed a 3.5" pipe with a 45 degree bend, a stainless band clamp to the cat, welded on a hanger rod,,use the same rubber hanger,,,and then clamped on a stainless tip,,dumps out in front of the rear wheel,,,she really barks from like 2300 rpm and up,,,,thats with the cat still on,,tried it as a total straight pipe,,,way to loud for me,,, dumping out the side. I jus wanted to try the stock exhaust this way,,could not see spending $ 400 to $ 700 on an exhaust system.
I put a full MBRP 4" TB on and later I gutted my cat and opened it to 4" and had it welded in (to replace the test pipe) and always pass inspections. I love the turbo whistle this combo provides. I also think that the gutted cat acts like an expansion chamber in a dirt bike (powerbomb, megabomb) and reduced the drone to zilch. I love it!

Reason: spelling
I put a cat delete pipe on my truck a few months ago. More turbo whistle is the only thing that I notice, I don't have an EGT gauge to tell if the temp is lower. I'm sure it's a little cooler.
