94 explorer xlt tranny ?

Probably cause first is shot. When you have it in D or OD, you start in first. When you put it in 2nd, it takes off in 2nd. Being that this is an A4LD trans (not one of Fords best designs) you probably need to have ti replaced/rebuilt. First thing to check would be the fluid. Does it look like syrup? If so, it's burnt due to lack of maintenance or excesive heat. Take it to a tranny shop and get it looked at. I had to replace the trans in my 92 with only 80K on it... due to lack of maintenance. At the time I was able to get a new one from Jasper with a 3 year, 50,000 mile warranty for $2200, and i was getting rebuild quotes for $1600 - $1800 with 3 to 6 month warranties... so it was a no brainer to go with the Jasper.
