I have changed over to an explorer rear end. I sent it out to get the spring perches welded on. The question I have though, is how am I going to mount the shock? I've included a picture of the old mount for it, but I think if i get it grinded down to where the 3.25" axle will fit into it, the u-bolts won't fit into it anymore. The u-bolts do fit on the springs, but I was figuring on replacing them anyway due to age and a different size axle. Surely someone has ran into this problem. What do I do???
Did you use the explorer spring plates, or are you going to use the explorer's sway bar, if not you can use the bracket for the sway bar and use a 2X2 piece of square tube to put the shocks on
You got a couple of choices here. If you want to retian the stock style shock mount then you need to use the shock mount for the F2 or larger trucks which will fit the 3" axle tubes. The other choices is to change to regular "U" shaped "U" bolts that come up from the bottom. Make yourself a flat plate at the top of the spring for them to bolt through and then fabricate or buy some ready made shock mounts to weld onto the axle tubes.
I am installing a Mustang 8.8 rear end in my 50 F1 and need a lower spring plate and shpck mount. I see recommendations to use the mounts from an F2 or larger truck. Does anyone have a set for sale?
I've always been told to never reuse the u-bolts no matter how old they are. I only paid $25 to have new made. That was for the front and back. Ask the shop where you are having the perches added and they might be able to add shock mounts also.
Mike
I ended up doing that. Pete and Jake's have a neat little thing they fabricated that allows you to put the shock in up to 4 different heights on the axle. I'll be taking it out Monday, along with the frame so they can do something for the upper shock mount, to get it welded on.
bobby said it all , what i was gonna suggest . i got a set from stu for a f-250 or up , and they fit my 9 inch like they were supposed to be there stock . not to hard to find i'd think as i have been seeing a lot of the bigger stuff hidden away here lately , but rotted away . good for parts though like the shock mounts .......
Hi, Tiger 698
When you had the spring perches welded what was the angle you set for the driveshaft. I haven,t done my yet myself. Wasn,t sure if I needed to wait to put the motor in first to get the angle are was there a standard angle to go with.
Jack, I did weld them in. I took the rear end to Pete & Jakes. He said that he just needed the rear end and he could do the pinion angle with it. So I am guessing there is a standard angle to go with. I am taking a trip out there tomorrow (as long as my dad doesn't go back into the hospital tonight) to get some more work done on my frame, and if I remember I'll ask.
