Power Steering Pump Headache
I have posted a question on this before, but I'm back to trying to figure it out. NumberDummy told me I needed to get a pre-77 p/s pump and bracket. I finally tracked one down. It came off of a 70 Ford Mustang. The previous one I was trying was off of an 80s truck (don't know the specific year though).
I got the new one and tried to mount it, but had the exact same problem. It doesn't want to line up. I compared the two mounting brackets and they are almost identical. I took some pictures so everyone could see my problems. In the pictures comparing the two brackets and two pumps, the cleaner one is the 80s model and the dirty is from the 70 Mustang. In the other picture, you can see how close it is to mounting to the bolt, just doesn't quite make it.

Any recommendations on my next step?

which engine is this? I had some similar problems on my 302 though not to the same degree. I was able to file the bracket holes a tiny bit larger and it fit ok. Check the brackets you have are the right matching part numbers (even tho they look ok to me).
someone more helpful will probably reply soon!!

What is that motor?I have a 351w from early 70s and it has a water pump with the hose on the drivers side.I used a bracket from a 78 bronco.Could it be a later 5.0 with a reverse flow pump?Maybe thats the problem.
This is probably of no help but I was wondering if pictures of different aftermarket power steering brackets might help identify what it is that you have.

That hole in the head and those particular water pump bolts are in the same spot on all non-serpentine engines, so your problem isn't there. What IS different is the bracket when used on a 289/302 vs a 351W. The 351W has about an inch taller deck and the head and that bolt hole are consequently about an inch farther away from the water pump. I can't tell for certain which engine you're working on there, but my guess is that you are trying to use 302 P/S brackets on a 351W.
EDIT - After looking closer, your intake is too narrow to be a 351W, so that's not your problem either. Let me go look at one out in the barn.......

To me it looks like a bracket from a 351W would cure the problem...... but hard to tell for sure from the pics with these old eyes
But the 351W bracket is larger, as BlueOvalRage said......... I will try and remember to measure them both the next time I go out to the "parts pile".......

The engine is a 302. I'm not able to drill the holes a little wider because it doesn't even reach the hole I need it to get to. So that is out of the question.
Someone mentioned before that it was a reverse flow pump. I actually have no idea. It was the water pump that came with the engine (its a crate engine). It is a 302, so would you guys still recommend trying a mounting bracket from a 351W???
I'm willing to try almost anything. As soon as I get the p/s pump on and lines ran for it I get to start piecing the truck back together. I want to drive it sometime this summer (of course that was my goal last summer too).

You need a bracket stretcher...
I am interested in how this comes out since I ran into the same problem with my 302. I am looking at fabricating an entirely different bracket at this point.

Vern, a bracket stretcher would be great. I went to Sears for one, but they don't have them. Any suggestions on where I can pick one up? Haha.
Ya, I am about to start trying to make my own mount. It might be quicker and easier. I just don't know exactly how I would do it yet.

Ok I was out to the "parts pile" and....... the 302 bracket is approx 6" wide by 4" tall and, drum roll please
the 351W bracket is approx 7" wide and 4" tall.... does not explain though why a 302 bracket doesn't fit in the crate 302 though

Just a couple of thoughts, maybe 'another' bracket goes between the head and power steering pump bracket..say maybe an A/C bracket..maybe 'it' gets sandwiched between the P/S bracket and cylinder head..,maybe you need it also to make the fitting combination. If you decide to make your own, having all the brackets available would make it easier to figure out.(If you choose to make your own, try looking at it from this perspective," I like this from this brkt..and that from that brkt"..and so on) I know how frustratrating it can be.All the more important to know what your working with, and is part of the natural learning curve.
Maybe there are a couple of different water pumps available..or you may have some off-shore re-man unit? Keep us up to date on what you learn, it will probably help somebody down the line.. Go to a couple of car shows and start looking under hoods and asking questions when you see a winning combination,.. most folk's just love venting all kinds of good info if they ran across the same problem.. Good Luck!

I looked throught the barn last night, but the engine I've got out there has already got the brackets off of it. cmoritz has pinpointed your problem, though. The air conditioner bracket is a big L-shaped cast iron monster that bolted to the front of the head and water pump. I haven't played with an engine with this bracket design in 10 years or so, but I roughly remember how it was assembled. If memory serves, the A/C mount had a drilled and tapped hole that the power steering bracket bolted to. I poked around the internet and eBay to try to find a picture, but the A/C compressor and fan shroud obscures the power steering pump and brackets in all the pictures I found. My advice would be to go poke through the salvage yard and see how it is supposed to be put together. You've probably got the right bracket, but not all the associated parts.
Another possible option - if you email Trebors power steering parts (look them up on ebay or the net) with your engine numbers/pump numbers/year etc and the info you put on here they may be able to confirm if you have the correct bracket or not (and supply a correct one if its wrong).
Heres some pics of how mine mounts:

Its a 1971 302 - I used the later style pump but the older style one mounts up pretty much the same. Looking at your pics you might be lining up on the wrong bolts (looks like the bracket is too high compered to mine?

my 302
My pump mounts to bosses on the pump not on the pump bolts. it appears you have a non standard water pump.mine is a 74 , but i think they are the same from mid sixties 289 to early eighties 302.
