Is there supposed to be play in the axle/U joint between the knuckle and the autohub? My u joints have almost flattened the zirk fitting on the upper ball joint.
I can wiggle the u joints and with the autohub removed the entire axleshaft whatever it is moves!
I can almost feel my wallet getting robbed as we speak!
I have pics and a video of it actually moving I will post when I find the USB cord!
The shaft will have play if the knuckle seal is bad and there is no autohub in there to support the shaft. What you show in your video is the play the knuckle seal is allowing. If you pull on the shaft hard enough, it will come out of the axle along with the knuckle seal. Put the autohub back in and see if you still have that much play.
Get a new grease nipple on that upper balljoint before whole lotta dirt gets in there too.
So thats good to know. Im ordering 2 knuckle seals, 2 yellow o-rings, 2 needle bearings, and possibly the "dust seal/cap" but I dont know what or where that is and goes!
Leonard, is the knuckle seal the seal I have pictured above?!
The grease fitting is FUBAR. I think its practically welded closed. Still some of it there but not functional.
Yep, the knuckle seal is what you have pictured. the dust seal is on the other side of the u-joint from the knuckle seal. Its job is to stop crud from getting in between the shaft and the axle tube.
Once you replace the dust seals on both the hub abd he axle that slop will go away. I had the same problem, but my zerks were never ground down LOL. Then again, being in SoCal I hardly ever engage my 4wd
Danny,
Its not so much grinding as it is of the U joint being in the right place and the amount of play it had in it just beating it down. The fitting almost looks like the head of a nail right now. T shaped! I think Im going to buy upper and lower ball joints and replace them on that side while Im at it. Obviously the shop that put the hub in didnt know about the seal, more than likely didnt care about it!
