How much free play is acceptable in the front CV joints? While replacing my front u-joints today I noticed I can rotate the front differential u-joint flange about and inch or so on the rim of that flange before the play in the CV joint at the wheel is taken up. I don't have any noise when steering, no torn boots, so I don't really see a big immediate problem. The play seems to be almost all in the CV joints with maybe a small amount in the differential.

Also, when pulling the rear driveshaft, is a lot of oil going to pour out of the transfer case back end?

That play sounds excessive to me.
