I just bought a 78 f-250 4x4 with the 460 V-8. A couple quick questions. How do I tell what kind of rear end the truck has. There are no stickers, or tags on the front or rear diff's. Also since its an automatic should I assume its a c-6 transmission? Also what should I look for on the transfer case to see what kind it is? Thanks for the help. My internet connection is dial up (56K) so sorry I didnt do any thread searche's, it would have taken me all day. Thanks for the help
one last question. Some one removed the transfer case shifter and put a hurst shifter on it. If some one could describe the different positions for 2wd 4x4 hi 4x4 lo and neutral I would appreciate that as well.
Post your VIN number and your Warranty plate info (found on the door in the jamb) and we can tell you alot about what your truck came with. As for the axle type, try looking here Axle Identification Chart. Yours should be a Dana 60 in the rear and a Dana 44 in the front. The warranty plate will tell us the gear ratio.
Just look for the numbers that are casts into the housing around the diff. I think the front is next to the cover on the drivers side and the rear is in the same place or cast into the pumkin. I will have to look at mine tonight to be sure. But I think all of the danas of that year are cast into the diff.
thanks for the help so far much appreciated. Once the weekend comes Ill be back outside to get the info you guys asked for. Im not sure whats all been replaced on this truck. Its got a 460 V-8 that was rebuilt about 2 years ago he claimed, and the truck sat for 7 or 8 months. A tune-up, new battery and fresh gas and she runs good. The carb looks like it was tuned with a hammer, its beat and full of dents all over the case. Once the motor warms up and the choke opens it doesnt want to run after that. I have power going to the rear tail lights but nothing going to the brake lights so I've got to chase down the culprit. This was going to be my toy to go play with on the weekend but after getting T-boned by a suburban (young lady talking on cell phone didnt realize the light was red and hit me at full speed) at 50 mph my daily driver grand am wasn't driveable anymore. So I got 2 more weeks to try and get this thing safe to drive so I can turn in the rental. I should start getting pics up soon I hope.
U say that 460 came afther 83 but i got a sale catalog for my 1975 F250 higboyand a sale recipr that describes the 460 in that truck
1973 was the first year the 460 was available in F100/350's...with 2WD only.
There were no 460's offered with 4WD till 1983.
The only V8 offered in any 1973/76 F100/250 4WD was the 360.
The 351M & 400 were the only V8's available in 1977/79 with 4WD.
There is not one piece of Ford literature including sales brochures, shop manuals, dealer facts books and parts catalogs that lists any 460 4WD until 1983.
I'd PAY to see any Ford references that say different.
Good luck finding any, because there is no such thing, regardless of what you claim.
Post the VIN and take and post pics of these pieces of literature from this supposed F250 460 4WD.
btw: It's HIGH BOY not HIG BOY. HIGH BOY is not correct Ford nomenclature, as Ford never called them that. It's an enthusiasts term.
brake light switch is mounted to brake pedel under dash check that out do blinkers work?see if tag is still on front axle could be 3.55 or 4.11 if stock tranfer should be n.p.205
