Question 77 f150 4x4 351m oil pan question

My boy bought this truck to restore for his first car. my question is, the oil pan leaks like crazy and needs replacing. its a 351m standard shift. The pan looks like it was replaced before and looks like the dip stick was added to the side of the pan. the pan that is on it has the sump (deep part of the pan toward the rear of motor), the dip stick now is in the drivers side by the exhaust manafold but its shot. I thought that it should be behind the ALT in front of the valve cover on pass. side. Thats where mine is on my 351c motor. there is a hole there for one. The big question is what kind of pan should be on the truck. A front sump pan or rear sump pan. I think that if the dipstick is in the front then the sump should be in the front. I dont know anythnig for sure. any info on this will help me alot when i order a new one. if i have to change the pan to a front sump then i will also have to change the oil pick-up tube for the oil pump i would assume.
thanks

If it is a 351/400m 4x4 the dipstick is on the side of the pan on the driver's side. The sump on 4x4's are at the back to clear the cross member. See if you can clean it up and reuse. The 4x4 pan's are hard to come by and are no longer made. Well in Canada any way.

cannot be saved, someone already tried fiberglass repair. we replaced the cab and added headers, when we started it with the open headers the heat melted the patches. we were planning to replace it anyway but not right now. it has now moved up on the to-do list. thanks

I've got a rear (sort or middle) sump oil pan available that I didn't end up using for my build. I was planning on putting a 400 out of an LTD into my truck and bought the pan. I was unable to find the necessary pickup tube, got frustrated, and decided to do a 460 swap.
