Been thinking about this for the last week and now I'm in the process. Doing this cold turkey. Haven't had a smoke for 22 hours. Been sucking on cinnamon candy and drinking lots of water.
I forget how many times I've tried in the past to be honest. Patches, gum, nicotine gum, cold turkey attempts and sometimes a combination of things. Been a smoker for 10 years at 1pk/day.
When I was on the patches, I would take the patch off, go out and smoke and put the patch back on. Didn't work for me.
I ran a few searches and found some pretty inspirational threads and that I want to live longer and have more money for things that I need. I'll keep everyone up to speed.
My sympthies. I was lucky and managed to quit after only smoking about 10 years. I was doing 2 packs/day and would go buy a fresh pack before going to bed, if I was down to one cigarette.
But, fate intervened, and I was disemployed. My finances were such that I could either buy gas to go see my future wife, or buy smokes. Wife won out (no comment about what would happen now ). I was also pretty po'd at myself for being dependant on the darn things.
I havent quit or even tried to do so for many years. Stupid I know. I wish you 100% sucess . My cousin was buried today from smoke related lung cancer. My wifes cousins wife just found out she has it (also a smoker) and a former co worker(wife took food over to her just today) is in the final stages of lung cancer(she didnt smoke) . I am trying to find a way that might work for me. Good luck and keep posting . Maybe I can pick up on your progress and get inspired too.
I did it almost a year and half ago (july 4th 2007) cold turkey after 30+yrs and was easily a 3 pack/day smoker. if your really and honestly ready to quit it won't be too tough, yes I had some rough spots on occasion (actually the first week was a breeze) but the thought would cross my mind and I would just remind myself that I really didn't want one.
Another little trick adn this will sound really dumb to most people probably, but IF you can still find places that give you the option for smoking or not smoking like a restraunt go out to dinner and when asked tell them "I am a non smoker" it's all psychological but hearing yourself actually say you are a non smoker somehow actually reinforces it. You have to believe you are a non smoker and saying it out loud to someone else works.
Good luck Aspen...I mean that from the heart.
I like Monsters "Trick". I bet it could add a ton of emotional and psychological aid to be able to say that out loud.
Thanks guys! Going good so far, my cravings aren't as bad as I thought they would be. Maybe because I've tried so many times in the past too quit or is it my concious working for me?
Monster, I can't wait for that day to come that I can say "I am a non smoker"
Usually what's been helping me too is staying busy. Sitting around the house all day doesn't help me one bit. Can't stand sitting around anyway.
Today I have to go to Cleveland for a Christmas get together. No one else in the family smokes (not anymore) so we'll see how that pans out.
9 1/2 years smoke free for me. and i smokes 2-3 packs a day for 25 years.
i quit cold turkey the day i put me best friend of 45 years in the ground.
the hardest part for me was not lighting up when i had a beer or cup of coffee.
so i quit drinking beer and coffee.
i started back with 1 cup of coffee 5 years ago, and never bothered with the beer.
i now can not even be in the same room with a smoker, the smell swells up my throat and i cant breath.
HEY!!!!
You got kids????
Make a game out of it with them!
1 of the gals I went to School with married a guy who smoked like a freight train. Their son on his 9th birthday wanted a super soaker for his present. She came up with an idea that when Daddy lit up,,,,, LET 'EM HAVE IT!!!!!!! He quit very quickly from the constant water bombs! She told him that everytime Dad lit up , Let him have it! She paid him $1 for everytime,,,,,,BTW, He had the gun paid for in 3 days! That young man is now in the Marines as a Sniper Instructor!
My friend, who was a heavy smoker, decided to quit. Tried the gum, the patches, and even hypnosis. No luck. His minister, who also had quit, gave his some advice. Not to sound religious or to give you a morality lesson, but it worked. He taped a small cross to the inside top of the pack. Every time he reached for a cigarette and saw the cross he thought of this: " Jesus died on the cross, and we can't stop smoking......? " Believe it or not, it worked for him. I guess if you compare the sacrifices, it makes sense. Anyway, best of luck, and think how good you will feel in the future!
If you think quitting is hard, just imagine how much harder it will be to quit a year from now, or ten years from now.
Try and view it as a matter of responsibility. When you're responsible for something you don't think about how hard it is, you just make sure it gets done.
I'm pretty well convinced that this time I will quit. I need to start buckling down and saving money where I can, trying to get the truck paid off. I was spending about $170/month just on cigs. That's about half a car payment.
Every night before I go to bed, I would step out and have that last smoke. The drawback is I would cough until I horked up a lung. It's been 2 days since I had so much as a puff and I haven't had my coughing problem since.
