My condolences Carl! Both of my Grandfathers died of the same thing, aorta (sp?) ruptured. Both died the same year within 6 months of each other. Both smoked like freight trains. I was only 7 at the time and didn't know them very well. I feel your pain brother man!
Update, Some bad news is I slipped up. I was struggling at work with a craving. I bummed a smoke from a co-worker, that was the end of it. Bought a pack, now I'm back too it.
However, the good news is I'm starting Chantix. My Dad and a couple of his good friends have all quit for good using Chantix. My Dad has smoked for 35+ years and hasn't had a smoke in 3 weeks. I started on it as of this morning.
Honest to God when I say I want to get off the smokes. Can't stand being so dependant on them and paying the price.
I have been smoking 1-3 packs a day for 27 yrs and I have tryed to cut back and quit a few times but willpower only is not a choice for me so I wound up going to the Debora Hart & lung Center to have a complete cardio workout and find out how clogged my arteries were and then I went to a stop smoking work group when there and after a few visits had a one on one with the Doc and she told me that I was going to need more then will power and put me on Chantix for a 5 month program and after one month I was down to a couple smokes a day when my wife lost here job and I could no longer afford Chantix and and the stress got to me so I picked up where I left off.Yesterday I went back to my doctor and got a 4 month prescription of Chantix and going to give it a go again this time I hope I can give them up once and for all,my wife is also a smoker and had quit for a year once but this time I am going to get her on the Chantix if I can, it will be alot easier if we both stop.
I've been on Chantix for about a week. No smokes since I started using it.
The instructions say your allowed to smoke for the first week to allow the Chantix to build up in your system. I'm determined more than ever and I ran out of smokes the other day.
Chantix works quite well. My cravings are only mild and I don't think about them that much. Once a day at the most. The cool thing is while I'm at work or doing something, hours upon hours will pass before I realize it's been that long even thinking about cigarettes.
The other side of that story is I've had some pretty wild dreams. Some of them unpleasant and I can remember most of them quite vividly.
I'm finding myself more calm and relaxed. Kind of like having a beer on a summer evening.
Some of the side effects of Chantix don't occur to me. Suicidal thoughts, natious feeling, vomitting etc... Only side effect I'm having is the wicked dreams. I will continue with the Chantix because at this point, I feel it's the only thing that truely help smokers if there committed. Chantix really does help me make the quitting process alot easier. Between keeping the cravings mild and keeping my thoughts about cigarettes to a minimum.
SuperSnake, I wanted to add to your rep. but my computer isn't letting me for some reason. I noticed FTE made some changes recently so it could be that or my computer is just old. I wanted to thank you for adding to my rep and wanted to return the favor. Thanks man!!
Thats the way it was for me the first time I was on it and I really only smoked because of boredom, and I didn't mind the dreams as with the other meds I was on I didn't dream(or remember dreaming) the dreams are vivid but not nightmares(at least for me) I only felt sick to my stomach once other then that no other side effects for me.
Well I am breathing life into this thread. I am still 100% smoke free. No cravings, jogging the mile trail at the park without falling over dead, got a mountain bike from my girls for my birthday and hit the trails today for a bit. I did gain 6 pounds but its okay. Better that than the smoking side effects alternatives. My office is much easier to hang out in as most of the smokers who stop in now smoke outside out of respect.
I have done really well. Yes I am patting myself on the back because I really thought I was going to be a smoker for ever.
I think my four month mark is coming along in a few weeks.. I find it weird that I cannot picture myself ever touching a cigarette, I cannot even think about smoking.

Aren't you thinking about it when you post on this thread? Keep posting, though! It's good to talk to others in the same situation (kinda like AA). There is going to come a day when you get the urge to smoke. for me, it came out of nowhere. The urge was incredibly strong. Scary! But I didn't give in that time (I did end up starting back up for another year, but eventually quit again).
I'm two years smoke free now. But I do from time to time feel the urge.
Good luck with it Moose and congratulations.
I am about the same time frame and yep occasionally I do have that urge but I do notice that it's gotten pretty easy to just ignore them as time has gone on.
