Ok guys. I put about 60 miles on the truck today for work. When I got home I let the truck idle for a little bit and I checked the fluid level on the dipstick. This is where I am getting confused.
On the backside of the dipstick where there is no writing on it, it has about 2" of fluid on it, while the front side with the writing only shows a small amount on the stick. I added another 1/2 quart which totals 12 quarts added to the trany so far, and let the truck idle for a while before checking again. The additional 1/2 quart had no affect on the fluid level.
So here are two observations I had this evening. I bottled up all the fluid that I drained from the trany and converter minus the pint or so that I lost on the ground, and it totaled 12 quarts. I then read my ford service manual, and it actually says for the C6 trany that it should take 13.5 quarts to fill it up on a fluid change. I don't know if my truck was at the correct level or not originally, but are we all missing something here since the book says 13.5?
Not sure what else to try now, as I don't want to overfil it and have to drain some fluid off.
I changed my tranny fluid recently and added a drain plug to the pan. I will always change the filter when changing the fluid. The drain makes it less messy, especially if you ever have to pull your tranny.
First Today, to change the filter, you have to remove the pan. So what is the point of adding a drain plug if you are going to change the filter every time you change the fluid?
Where should you be on the dipstick? I haven't looked at mine in awhile, but if the level is supposed to be higher than 2 inches on the dipstick, keep filling.
I was figuring that the writing side of the dipstick is wiping off as I raise it up the pipe and the other side is not. I tried checking it late last night, and still nothing.

So much less mess when taking the pan off to get to the filter.
Well, I changed gears last night and thought about this more. I decided to check the trany fluid level this morning when everything was cold to see if there was a difference in how the dipstick would read. Whadya know, the side with the writing showed fluid right up to the top of the full mark.
So I suppose this means that it is really low since you are supposed to check it while it is running and warm. Should I just go ahead and put more fluid in and try to get the correct level at idle temperature?
