No need to drop the pan and change the screen (it's not really a filter) unless you have a catastrophic transmission failure. Unless you're going to have the transmission flushed a good procedure is to drain the pan (about 8 or 9 quarts) drive for a few hundred miles and change it again. I usually change my auxillary filter (at the passenger front of the truck) on the second oil change.
Yes the old filter is inside, its looks likes a roll of toilet paper. One more use only MERCON SP trans fluid,anything else could cause problems, good luck
I'm going to take the pan off, change the filter, gasket(since it's dripping from the pan) do the aux filter and refill it and see how it is. In a few hundred I will drain it again and change the fluid

Hey the pan has a kind of O ring type gasket that is reuseable, I pulled my pan the first time and changed screen slash pickup, cause didnt know better, so thats why it seeps just a hair now, dont over tighten the bolts
