Bad?? How bad??
So I know that it has been said that 83 and 84 6.9s are not as good as the later ones, but why is that? Are the parts the same? Found a 84 to use as a doner truck to my 85. Just wondering.

from what I've read they have a fault in the block that can cause it to crack around the block heater... some have problems, some don't. All the parts are the same as far as I know... someone correct me if I'm wrong

Seeing that Your in Tx, there would prolly never be a prob with the block heater crack. Just look at the block up by the starter. You'll see the BH. Inspect the surrounding block for the tell tale cracks.

The 83 engine is a bit different from any of the 84 and later engines.
The IP and injectors for the 83 are different.
DB2-4102 and A or AA injectors are 83 only specific parts.
If I remember right the head bolts on the 83 had the lowest torque settings of all of them.
They share the block heater issue with the 84 and early 85 engines.
They also share the weaker old style rockers with the 84, 85 and 86 engines.
When I looked at the block heater area, I would be most concerned if I saw where someone had tried to repair a crack.
If you need a block heater, install one in the lower radiator hose instead of using the stock unit.
