The ZF-5 is rated at 450 (or close to) ft. lbs of torque not HP. You don't see upgraded transmissions cause to the best of my knowledge they don't exist. The ZF-5's still have issues when power is added to them but its mainly syncro issues. And they are still expensive to fix! Stock for stock the ZF will hold up better but the DMF won't. So if we are talking stock for stock you must take the SMF conversion out of the list as well.....
For me I will take my modded auto and when it fails it will be FULLY built! Via Me and RacerX!

My point proven by the master Pastor
Note to other users: When the Fisher of Men come together, beware!!!! lol
you can get billet inputs and outputs for the zf trans and i have heard something about brass synchros for a lot faster shifts, but currently if i shift as fast as i can i can only hold 15psi or so. when it comes to trannys it's strictly user preference and obviously everyone is different. i personally like my 5 speed and will keep my 5 speed unless i for some reason go on a hunt for 10's in my PSD..
i didn't read the whole thread but about half way down a guy says that the E4OD is better than a ZF-5. no way one day im hualin hay, pulling just fine, no work for the truck. i come to a 4 way stop and thats it. snap ring inside pops off for no reason. the lack of pressure burns the clutch up.
the good news is it didn't cost me a penny to fix, but thats a story for another day.
That is common with a SMF. I believe it is called gear roll. What happens with the DMF is that engine noises and vibrations are absorbed in the DMF. When you go to SMF there is less dampening effect. Therefore the vibrations and noises convey thru and into the tranny and it seems to intensify the noises. To reduce the noise I put 5 quarts of fluid in the tranny instead of the 3.4 it requires. It helps quite a bit but is still there a bit.
I wonder if some heavier lube or additive would help?
Thanks Neal
I have a 5 speed, now I know if you have an auto and do a lot of engine work you will have to build your tranny. I was wondering if that applies to manuals. Can they withstand the hp or will I need more than just a southbend clutch?
Manual trannys are almost all ways tougher than autos,,,,,,,,, have ya ever seen a shop that just repairs manual trannys? there are tons of automatic transmission shops around , not many manual transmission shops though.......
i love my zf5.. but the tranny a person has depends on what they do.. if ya do alot of heavy duty towing.. then the zf5 is prolly your best bet.. but if you just cruise and love that diesel truck.. an dont do alot of haulin then the e4od is prolly good for you.. its easier to drive.. it really depends on the person i guess..

I had a stick in my old 150, then a C6 in the '88 gasser 250. At first, I didn't like the auto because I was used to shifting (which I do like to do myself). But it grew on me after a while. Kinda nice being able to drink coffee and shift going around a corner from a stop.
But, my heart is always with a manual tranny for a truck. I considerd myself real lucky to have found the one I have now with the ZF in it.
Back when I used to pull campers to dealers around the country during a short stint as a hotshot hauler... I ran into a guy that had one heck of an outfit...97 F350 with a 3116 Cat and a Clark 6 speed out of an old utility company F700 4x4 ( I think ). He had to do some driveshaft mods and the Cat motor mounted from the front and had bellhousing mounts.... Now... thats a bulletproof combo if I ever saw one. The PSD that was in it got tired but he liked the truck so he did the serious upgrade. He could go up mountains at 1500 rpm in high gear, that had my PSD down to third and gasping for breath. Giant cast iron tranny and t case... bullet proof...still no match for a .50BMG ! The toy cases they call transmissions these days probably wouldnt stand up to a well placed 22 magnum... anyone here remember the 70's and SM465's BWT18's?...wonder if Dodge's 6 speed could be converted to Ford use... they're cast iron.... unfortunatly in FOMOCO's great wisdom, bellhousings are built right on the tranny.
Tough auto trannies... hey ! they're out there if ya have the coin...lose a cooler line, or let a deer stick an antler through your grill and they die just as fast as the stock ones. I've never lost a stick to a deer.....

Went through about 5 autos in about 7 years with a work truck. Why spend thousands building a auto when a stock 5 speed will get the work done? Unless you have the money to burn keep the 5 speed.
