Back when I used to pull campers to dealers around the country during a short stint as a hotshot hauler... I ran into a guy that had one heck of an outfit...97 F350 with a 3116 Cat and a Clark 6 speed out of an old utility company F700 4x4 ( I think ). He had to do some driveshaft mods and the Cat motor mounted from the front and had bellhousing mounts.... Now... thats a bulletproof combo if I ever saw one. The PSD that was in it got tired but he liked the truck so he did the serious upgrade. He could go up mountains at 1500 rpm in high gear, that had my PSD down to third and gasping for breath. Giant cast iron tranny and t case... bullet proof...still no match for a .50BMG ! The toy cases they call transmissions these days probably wouldnt stand up to a well placed 22 magnum... anyone here remember the 70's and SM465's BWT18's?...wonder if Dodge's 6 speed could be converted to Ford use... they're cast iron.... unfortunatly in FOMOCO's great wisdom, bellhousings are built right on the tranny.
Tough auto trannies... hey ! they're out there if ya have the coin...lose a cooler line, or let a deer stick an antler through your grill and they die just as fast as the stock ones. I've never lost a stick to a deer.....
Now that would be one tough truck with a Cat engine
I miss the old cast iron trannies. You all;s right though can't beat a manual for toughness. My 95 has a manual ZF5 been tough as hail and the 97 is a E4OD . I wonder ever time I hook the trailer up to the E4OD if it is gonna lay down on me or not. Hope someday get a BTS built
