My 97 4x4 4.6L has been pinging since about 180,000 miles... when it started I switched to 93 octane and the pinging disappeared. Recently it has occurred even w/ the 93 under really heavy load... I had a half full tank of 93 and filled up w/ 87 the other day and it's pinging like crazy and my regular gas station has recently posted signs (UP TO 10% ETHANOL ADDED) I'm just curious how much if any the ethanol might be messing with my truck...
I want to cure the pings it's starting to bother me...
The
Fuel Filter is fresh
The Air Filter is fresh...
where do I go from there? I also have a code "Lean on Bank 1, Lean on Bank 2"
Please list the procedure for doing whatever it is ya'll recommend...
Z, ethanol has an octane rating of 120 or so. It isn't going to cuase pinging. If you're getting a lean code, are you sure your O2 sensor is functioning correctly ? For what ever reason, you're not getting enough fuel. DinosaurFan
I have no clue if my O2 sensors are functioning correctly... I have considered replacing them but have been timid about doing it since they're approx 70 bucks each... Could that help, I don't want to waste the 150 bucks if it's not going to help... Any tips for replacing them?
I agree with White Max. They make a spray cleaner designed to clean MAF sensors. You don't want to use something that will contaminate or damage the sensor.
I have sprayed it with electron 13 in the past... can someone either explain the cleaning process or either link me to it? I already checked on just buying a new one... Over a 100 bucks :O
Get your codes pulled. Lots of the mod motors get problems with the MAF sensor. Back when I had a 1994 4.6 HO, when I first got it, it was running lean/pinging. Everyone on the Thunderbird site said 'MAF Sensor'. $100 later, it was running perfect.
.... Then I found out you could just clean them. But, I'm sure cleaning doesn't always work. It's like this, if you can unplug the MAF and it actually runs somewhat BETTER, you have a bad MAF.

It is definately not the ethanol all it does is add oxygen to the fuel and you might sell less mpg but , I thought you could tell it was the maf on idle. But who am I to say I am running lean since I put the 4.6l intake manifold on the 5.4l upgrade engine. I used the adapter plates.
