Anyone else have to bump up a grade in fuel because your motor hates the "up to 10% ethanol added" fuel at the pump? I can't run regular anymore because my motor pings like crazy! I now have to run 89 octane in order to prevent the pinging and my gas mileage has dropped since they started this 10% ethanol added.
I haven't had this problem. Do you have a programmer? If you do and you turned the timing up without putting higher octane gas that will lead to engine pinging. My edge is set to level 2 and I get no pinging because the timing is set to default.
Yes I have a tuner, but it pings even when it is stock. I have had three separate dealerships tell me that my stock 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee Hemi has to run on 93 Octane because of the ethanol. Sure enough it runs great only with 93.
I'm still trying to figure out the reasoning behind using an alternative fuel that has been proven to get worse mileage than plain old fossil fuel.
E85 (NOTE this is not 10% ethanol blend, but the 85% ethanol, 15% gasoline) produces approximately 4% to 9% less emissions than 10% ethanol blended gasoline. However, it produces between 20%-30% less miles per gallon than 10% blend. It costs on average 10% less per gallon than 10% blend, but delivers a significant decrease in fuel mileage.
Gasoline is more efficient and produces 114,000 BTU/gal, Ethanol is less efficient and E85 produces 81,800 BTU/gal.
10% blend produces 112,000 BTU/gal.
Gasoline produces 94% more energy than the energy required to make it, Ethanol produces only 25% more energy than the energy required to make it.
So 10% blend produces approx. 2% less energy than gasoline, but, E85 produces approx. 28% less energy than gasoline.
Only thing I can say for ethanol is that it can be made here in the USA and cellulose ethanol is a more viable option than corn as a renewable source. OH WAIT!!!! I see that the refiners are buying ethanol made from sugarcane from Brazil because it is CHEAPER than buying corn based ethanol here in the USA!
