Is there a standard on how far we want to keep the steering box screw backed off from tight? I want to do this as my steering is loose. I don’t want to ruin my steering box though.

Five months later and I'm back to driving a clown car down the road...lots of my steering slop is back. I guess the only thing left to do is order up a Redhead box.

Has anybody ever changed the big I-beam bushings on a 2wd? A look at mine indicated they were cracked and worn. I'm thinking this will help somewhat...but never hear any talk of it.

I saw a post that explains how to adjust the set screw by a very reputable guy on here. I'll see if I can find it and I will post it here.

Guys, I will add that it would be a good idea to also flush the PS pump and fill with synthetic tranny fluid.

Did that...it does quiet the pump down quite a bit...brakes feel a little better too. AND USE ATF!!! That's what the system was designed for.

How do you know if there is ATF in there? Is there a color difference? How do you flush it?

ATF is red, power steering fluid is clear. In all likely hood, what is in your power steering pump is black. I strongly advise using a good synthetic tranny fluid.

I will do that, I sure would see pics of where you drain the fluid.

Just take a suction gun and suck the fluid out of the reservoir and refill it. I do it once a year. Easy and cheap.

I did the flush as described by Powerstrokejunkie in the thread I have listed above because the fluid was pretty much black in both of my trucks. Since then, I do as you say, and just suck out as much fluid as I can when I do an oil change, and top off with synthetic tranny fluid.

Does ATF work better because it's thicker or something?

It's not thicker. I just know that's what is supposed to be used in our trucks. The synthetic will stand more heat than regular ATF.
