Well, the thing comes off easy enough, pully too. Had it out in 30 minutes and was headed to the part store.
Well I ran into an issue with pressing the pully back on. I have one of those pully pulller kits that also works for pressing the pullies back on. Got the pully close, about 1/4 inch left, and then the bolt snapped in half, and the pump went flying. This cracked off the low pressure return hose nub, and I was left with a stub of the bolt sticking out of the water pump.
Should this process be this hard. This is the 3rd power steering pump that I have done and none have been this hard to press the pully back on. I ordered another pump, but I am wondering if I should try to find another pully ( and if so where can I get one). Should I just have the pully pressed on at a machine shop?
This should be a very easy process. Use the bolt in the puller kit, or the new pump, to slowly seat the pulley. It's interference fit, so it won't just slip on, but it will go on slow and steady. If this isn't the case, either you're not putting it on straight, or the pulley is warped.
It's a pretty common pulley, so you should find it pretty easily in a junkyard. Number Dummy would be able to tell you what vehicles it can be found in. I'm pretty sure those pullies were used in sedans, trucks, etc for many years. If you find a vehicle with the pump still there, it will probably still have the pulley. The trouble will be finding a vehicle that hasn't had it's pump snatched yet.
Number dummy is the user name of a person on this site. I believe he worked as a Ford parts man for ~35 years and he is extremely helpful with part references and dealer inventories.
As far as the pully, you should be able to find a part number on it and then you can match it up at your local junk yard. My was warped and this is what I had to do.
