thanx for all the input guys. ive been wondering about the yield strengths too. all the ones on ebay are 200,000, hopefully I can find the 220,000 psi studs.
just need to get the wife to approve of the big plans... hx40w, intercooler and of course the head studs... then we will see if the pump will feed the beast.
thoughts?
I have to ask, what are your goals and budget?
If all you want is some more power, then you could get a used turbo kit and be rolling for ~$500. That will push the engine well over 200 Hp and torque close to 450 without changing much else (will have to adjust fuel flow in the IP). Not sure if you have ever driven a turbo IDI, but you may be suprised how much of a difference even 5 PSI of boost would make and it really wouldn't cost much if you get a used turbo. If you stay below 10 PSI even replacing the head bolts is not needed.
yes 5-7 psi does wake it up. I have the hypermax turbo installed right now. I am getting bored with that though. hx40 is a t4 flange have two hx40G turbos sitting in the garage just need to make sure it will bolt up with out interfering with anything. hypermax turbo spools slowly and does not boost as high as i would like, do to the 1.15 A/R ratio. I can fabricate my own CAC system not going to spend 1500 for a CAC. will probably need a new fuel pump after turning the fuel screw in all the way.
My truck has stock head bolts and regularly sees 10 lbs+. I actually had to adjust the wastegate to open earlier because I was getting 17 lbs. towing up hill when I got the truck. Who knows how long that was going on as the truck didn't have a boost gauge when I got it.
I now have the wastegate set to not boost over 15 (ever).
