When i bought my 68 i noticed the clutch need adjustment well today i went to adjust it and its been adjusted all the way out so there is no more adjustment. I am guessing its time for a clutch replacement i think i am going to pull the motor and tranny together i hate trying to work under the truck
especially on a job like this. Does anybody have any tips or tricks?
If you have no more adjustment I am guessing it has too much free play and you can't adjust it enough to get rid of the extra free travel. If so that is not symptom of a worn clutch. Look for a problem in the linkage t/o bearing or cab mounts. A worn out clutch would cause the opposite. Can.t get any free play adjusted into it or slipping.
Be sure what the problem is before you tear it down.
I can move the clutch fork about an inch and half out from where the clutch rod hits the fork while its trying to engage the clutch. The bushings are wore out in the release bar assembly on one side but i dont think it would cause that much play with the rod adjusted all the way out. The problem is that when i push the clutch in it wont engage the clutch enough and it grinds the gears until i push real hard on the clutch pedal.
Chwek your front cab mounts. If they are rusted out and letting the cab settle down it will cause your problem. Also check for wear or looseness in the linkage every where between the clutch pedal and the throw out arm.
I don't think you can get the engine/trans over the radiator support, anyway. I rebuilt a 390/granny gear 4spd combo and tried to install them together, and I couldn't get them over the support; had to seperate them, install the engine, and then install the tranny from the bottom. It's really not too bad if you get a jack with the tilting bed.

Your truck may not need a clutch replacement.
What does your clutch adjustment rod look like?
Originally, it was TWO pieces.
A threaded rod 3 29/64" long, and a pointed extension that was 2 27/64" long.
The extension slipped over the threaded rod, 2 nuts were used the tighten it up.
If the pointed extension is missing, there is no way = NONE = that you can adjust the clutch properly.

Yes all the parts are there if the pointed extension was missing i dont think it would engage the shift fork. I have to pull the core support to change it so while it was out i was gonna pull the motor and tranny together way easier than working on it on jack stands.
I installed my 302 and 4 speed as one assembly over the rad support at an angle , just took out the crossmember before the tranny cross member , took it out that way also .
Sometimes the flywheel gets turned a lot, and I have found this trick/tip worked great!
It is in this link to a thread that I posted on a while back, give it a try and let us know what
you think about how it works!

Check the fork. I had one break at the spring clip that holds it to the bell housing .
The fork is good. I am gonna just try to extend the adjusting rod just a little for now and when i do my body work and change the core support i will fix it then.
